Troubleshoot Group Policy by diagnosing processing, replication, connectivity, performance, and Windows Server 2025 hardening compatibility issues.
Learning objectives
In this module, you'll:
- Trace a setting from its Group Policy Object (GPO) link and Group Policy Container through the Group Policy Template, client-side extension processing, effective Windows state, and application behavior.
- Predict and diagnose scope, precedence, inheritance, filtering, loopback, targeting, and resultant policy.
- Correlate configuration reports, simulated and actual RSoP, Activity-ID event timelines, infrastructure evidence, and setting-specific effective-state evidence.
- Diagnose inconsistent results caused by Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and DFSR/SYSVOL replication, domain controller selection, permissions, DNS, connectivity, authentication, or timing.
- Isolate slow or incomplete processing caused by WMI filters, scripts, foreground requirements, slow links, unavailable networks, or client-side extension failures.
- Determine whether a successfully processed policy is unsupported, awaiting activation, superseded by another configuration authority, or incompatible with an application.
- Troubleshoot Windows Server 2025 LDAP and Kerberos hardening compatibility issues and select safe pilot, containment, rollback, and validation actions.
- Automate Group Policy inventory, reporting, comparison, backup, evidence collection, and escalation preparation.
Prerequisites
- Experience creating, editing, linking, backing up, and restoring domain-based Group Policy Objects.
- Working knowledge of AD DS sites, domains, organizational units, security groups, DNS, domain controllers, SYSVOL, and basic AD DS and DFSR replication concepts.
- Familiarity with Group Policy Management Console, Event Viewer, Windows PowerShell, and Windows networking.
- Understanding of Local, Site, Domain, and Organizational Unit processing, including basic inheritance and filtering.
