Social and governance metrics and reports (preview)

Important

Some or all of this functionality is available as part of a preview release. The content and the functionality are subject to change.

The Social and governance metrics and reports (preview) capability allows you to combine disparate data from various sources into a standard schema that provides data models for social and governance records. You can then use the standardized data to define, compute and analyze social and governance metrics. You can also visualize the trendlines and explore social and governance metrics through interactive dashboards.

The items deployed in this capability include notebooks and data lakes that compute and store social and governance metrics based on standardized data models. The capability also includes dashboards to visualize and analyze social and governance metrics.

This capability deploys the following data lakes:

  • ProcessedSocialAndGovernanceData: Stores harmonized social and governance data conforming to a standardized ESG data model.

  • ComputedSocialAndGovernanceMetrics: Stores computed social and governance metrics and aggregated analytical datasets.

  • ConfigAndDemoData: Stores the ESG data model schema file and demo data in the ESG data model schema.

All resources that this solution deploys are prebuilt and deployed into your Fabric workspace. The resources are open, and you can customize them to meet your needs.

The Social and governance metrics and reports (preview) capability includes the following features:

Data ingestion and transformation

You can integrate your social and governance data from disparate sources using Fabric ingestion capabilities such as data pipelines and data flows.

After the source data integrates into a lakehouse in your workspace on Fabric, you can unify and harmonize the data into the Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability ESG data model schema. This schema provides standard data models for social and governance records.

You can transform the data to ESG data model schema using Fabric dataflows, or you can build and run notebooks.

Before you build the transformation logic, you can explore the ESG data model schema by using these artifacts, which are deployed in the workspace during the ESG data estate deployment.

  • ESGschema.json: This file provides the schema of the tables in the Cloud for Sustainability ESG data model including details around columns, primary key, and foreign key relationships for each table. This file is stored in the Config folder of the ConfigAndDemoData lakehouse. To understand the tables for social and governance, refer to the tables tagged to the Environmental Social and Governance business area in the schema file.

  • GenerateSocialAndGovernanceTables: This notebook provides the create table function that you can use to create empty tables for the social and governance sustainability area.

Note

If you want to use the prebuilt notebook deployed along with the capability for computing aggregated datasets and metrics, then ensure that you transform your social and governance data for the list of tables mentioned in the demo data. You can access demo data from ConfigAndDemoData lakehouse files section. If you want to compute additional metrics, you might need to map additional tables to the social and governance data model tables of the Cloud for Sustainability ESG data schema.

Computation of analytical datasets and metrics

After the source data transforms and maps to the Cloud for Sustainability ESG data schema, you can compute analytical datasets and metrics to analyze your organization's social and governance data. This capability deploys the GenerateSocialAndGovernanceMetrics notebook in your workspace. You can use it for generating specific social and governance metrics. You can update the notebook if you want to update the computation logic for specific metrics or compute other metrics.

Prerequisite

Ensure that your data is transformed to the ESG data model schema for the social and governance area. Also ensure that it's in the ESG data model schema tables that are used in the notebook. To explore the functionality, you can also load the demo data into the ProcessedSocialAndGovernanceData lakehouse and use that for computing metrics.

After the notebook runs successfully, required metrics are created as tables in the ComputedSocialAndGovernanceMetrics lakehouse.

Note

This preview version only supports full snapshot refresh of Sustainability Manager data and not incremental delta data refresh. The prebuilt transformation notebooks deployed with the capability also support only full snapshot refresh. Also, if you update other data into those tables populated by these notebooks and then run them, the data is overwritten.

Data visualization and analysis

After the metrics are computed and stored as tables, you can use the prebuilt Power BI dashboard for analyzing the metrics.

  1. Open the ReportDataset semantic model from your workspace or from the Social and governance metrics and reports (preview) capability detail page.

  2. On the top left, select File, and then select Settings. In the Data source credentials section, select Edit credentials.

  3. Provide your Fabric credentials in the dialog box for authenticating the ComputedSocialAndGovernanceMetrics lakehouse data source. Select the following values:

    • Authentication method: OAuth2
    • Privacy level setting for this data source: Organizational

    Select Sign in.

  4. After you sign in successfully, go back to the semantic model home page and select Refresh now from Refresh menu option. After the refresh completes, the dataset is refreshed with data from the ComputedSocialAndGovernanceMetrics lakehouse.

If there are any errors in the refresh, you can find the error details by viewing the Refresh history option on the Refresh menu.

  5. Now open the SocialAndGovernanceMetricsReport from the capability detail page or from your workspace. The report with specific social metrics appears.

Note

Metrics data only appears if the data exists in the ComputedSocialAndGovernanceMetrics lakehouse.

Currently, the prebuilt Power BI report only supports social metrics for Workforce training and development. In future releases, the report will expand to cover other social and governance metrics that are computed with the prebuilt GenerateSocialAndGovernanceMetrics notebook.
