エンコードでは、Unicode 文字をエンコードされたバイト シーケンスにマップします。その後、ディスクなどの物理メディアに転送したり、通信リンクを介して転送したりすることができます。 文字はさまざまな方法でマップでき、特定のエンコードは クラスから Encoding 派生した型によって表されます。 具体的には、エンコード型の GetBytes メソッドは文字をバイト シーケンスにエンコードし、メソッドは GetChars バイト シーケンスを文字にデコードします。

エンコードによって入力バイト シーケンスをマップできない場合、デコード操作が失敗する可能性があります。 たとえば、オブジェクトは ASCIIEncoding 、U+0000 から U+007F の範囲外のコード ポイント値を持つ文字を生成するバイト シーケンスをデコードできません。
