An external list is an external data source that is registered in the Business Data Connectivity service (BDC) on a server that runs SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010. An external list is based on an external content type that specifies how to connect to and work with the data from an external business entity, such as a SQL Server database or Web service. After you create an external list, you can generally use its data like any other SharePoint list.
