How to Fix Office Help "Turned Off"

In any component of MS Office (click-to-run) 2024 inside Windows 11, attempting to access Help results in the following message (transcribed):

"This command isn't available.

"Your organization's administrator turned off the service required to use this feature."

I am my own organization's administrator. What might I have done (e.g., blocking access of some Microsoft component to the Internet) that might have caused this? How do I fix it?

Dear @JcW32,

I hope you’re having a good day.

This error is commonly caused by Office's Connected Experiences being disabled, either through privacy settings or a policy configuration. When that happens, features such as Help that rely on online services become unavailable.

I recommend trying the following:

  1. Open Word or Excel.
  2. Go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings. User's image
  3. Turn on optional connected experiences User's image
  4. Close all Office applications and reopen them.

If those settings are already enabled:

  1. Check whether you have recently applied any:
  • Local Group Policy changes
  • Privacy-hardening tools
  • Firewall or DNS filtering rules that may block Microsoft services.
  1. Run an Office repair:
  • Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Office 2024 > Modify
  • Try Quick Repair first.
  • If the issue persists, try Online Repair. X Microsoft How would you like to repair your Microsoft 365 and Office programs? Quick Repair Fixes most issues quickly without the need for an internet connection. O Online Repair Fixes all issues, but takes a little longer and requires an internet connection throughout. You can select this option if you are still having problems after a Quick Repair. Repair Cancel

Please let me know what you find, especially whether those settings were disabled or already enabled, and I'll be happy to suggest the next steps.

Looking forward to hearing back from you with any updates or additional details.

Warm regards,

This message usually appears because the Office online services used by Help are disabled, most commonly connected experiences.

Try this first in Word or Excel:

    1. Open the app.
    2. Go to File > Options.
    3. Select General.
    4. Open Privacy Settings.
    5. Turn on Enable optional connected experiences.
    6. If shown, also turn on the setting for experiences that download online content.
    7. Save the change and restart the Office app.

A second path, if available in the app, is:

    1. Go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
    2. Make sure Connected experiences is enabled.
    3. Restart the app.

If that fixes Help, the blocked service was the Office connected online experience used for Help, training, and related content.

If the setting is already enabled or cannot be changed, the feature may be restricted by policy. In that case, Office is behaving as designed when an administrator setting blocks the feature.

If Office itself is malfunctioning rather than just blocked by settings, repair the installation on Windows 11:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
    2. Select the Office app entry.
    3. Open Advanced options if available, then select Repair.
    4. If that does not help, use the Office repair flow and choose Online Repair.

If commands in Office are disabled because of administrator policy, the documented resolution is to contact the administrator. In a self-managed device, that means reviewing any local policy or privacy configuration that disabled connected experiences.
