I'm getting an error message on Word that says it needs to close to repair. I have the option of pressing 'repair' but it just closes does the application.

As suggested by the AI bot, try an Online Repair instead. Exit all Office apps and then start the repair; see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b .

Before you begin, make sure that you can access your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that Office is associated with it. That way, you can reinstall Office, which is usually the final step in an Online Repair.

Use an Online Repair of Office, as the built-in “Repair now” prompt is not fixing the issue.

Follow these steps in Windows 10/11:

    1. Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
    2. Open Settings.
    3. Go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features).
    4. Find the Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office product in the list.
    5. Select it, choose Modify.
    6. When prompted for the repair type, choose Online Repair, then select Repair and let it complete.

This runs a full repair of the Office installation and typically resolves the “Word has run into an error… Would you like us to repair now?” loop.

If Word still fails after Online Repair, uninstall Office from the same Installed apps page, restart the PC, then reinstall Office from the Microsoft account where it was originally obtained.
