Use group settings to manage how students, teachers, and devices work in your school.
Settings that you assign to users follow the users no matter what devices they use. Similarly, settings that you assign to devices follow the devices, no matter who uses them.
Settings apply to Intune for Education groups. Since groups are set up as hierarchies, with one group above another, all settings you apply to a group are inherited by its subgroups. Inheritance makes it easier to apply settings to large groups of users and devices. For more information, see What is settings inheritance?
You can manage group settings in Intune for Education in two ways:
Express Configuration: Configure a selection of the most commonly used school settings. Go to Express Configuration for a guided setup where you can select and assign group settings. Settings are preconfigured to Microsoft-recommended values but can be changed to fit your school's policies.
Groups: Configure all settings for any group of devices or users. Go to Groups and select a group to see the full list of available settings. For more information about available settings, see:
Configure Express Configuration settings
Use Express Configuration when:
- You're getting started in the portal.
- You want to make quick changes.
For a detailed look at the Express Configuration steps, see Express Configuration in Intune for Education.
Configure settings in Groups
From this page, you can see all available settings categories and configuration options.
Sign in to Intune for Education.
Go to Groups.
Select the group you want to configure.
Select Settings and then select the type of settings you want to configure. Your options:
Windows device settings
iOS device settings
Select a settings category, such as Accounts and sign-in or Device restrictions to see all available settings.
Modify the settings as needed. Settings you leave unchanged aren't managed by Intune for Education, and devices keep their default OS behavior for those settings.
Select Save. Settings are automatically updated on all devices in the group.
Can I ever have settings that don't work together?
Yes. Two types of conflicts can happen:
- Peer-group conflict: A user or device belongs to two groups that have different values for the same setting. For example, if Esperanza is in both 6th Grade and Earth Science, and each group assigns a different homepage, Intune flags the conflict. Review the settings errors report and see Troubleshoot groups to resolve it.
- Inheritance conflict: A subgroup inherits a setting from its parent group that's too broad or too restrictive for that subgroup. You can override it by configuring the subgroup directly. For more information, see Settings inheritance.
