In Windows 11, to display the Emoji window, you can hold the Windows logo key User's image and press . (period).

In the taskbar settings, you can choose to add an icon for that window to the taskbar.

Emojis in Word do not depend on an add-in or a separate “emoji keyboard” add-in. On supported Windows versions, emojis are inserted using the built-in Windows emoji panel and rendered using the system emoji font.

    Use these checks and steps:

    1. Use the built-in Windows emoji panel
      • In any text area in Word, press Windows logo key + . (period).
      • The emoji panel should appear. Click an emoji to insert it into the document.
      • On Windows 11, the same panel also provides GIFs, kaomoji, and symbols.
    2. If emojis show as empty squares or boxes
      • This is a font/Windows support issue, not an add-in or certificate issue.
      • On Windows 7 with Office, install the Segoe UI Emoji font updates appropriate for the Office version:
        • Office 2016 MSI: install update KB 3203471.
        • Office 2013 MSI: install update KB 4011087.
      • For Office 2016 Click‑to‑Run on Windows 7, update Office to at least:
        • Version 1704 (Build 8067.2115) or later (Monthly Channel), or
        • Version 1708 (Build 8431.2079) or later (Semi‑Annual Channel Targeted).
      • Without these updates (or without upgrading Windows), emojis will continue to appear as square boxes even if they insert correctly.
    3. If Word itself is crashing or “stopped working” when inserting emojis
      • Start Word in Safe Mode to rule out add-ins:
        • Press Windows key + R, type winword /safe, and press Enter.
        • If Word works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins via File > Options > Add‑Ins, then use Manage to turn them off one by one.
      • If the problem persists, run an Online Repair of Office:
        • Go to Start > Settings > System > Apps > Installed apps.
        • Find Microsoft Office, select Modify, choose Online Repair, then Repair.
    4. No need for an emoji add-in or certificate
      • Word does not require any separate emoji add-in or security certificate to insert emojis.
      • Rely on the Windows emoji panel and ensure the system/Office emoji font support is up to date as described above.
