Is there any way to go back to Old Outlook w/o the toggle ability?

I absolutely loathe New Outlook with the burning passion of a thousand suns - terrible & annoying features - but on my new machine, it's New Outlook or nothing. The toggle is not available.

Yes. Classic Outlook can still be used even when the New Outlook toggle is missing, if the environment supports it.

    1. Verify classic Outlook is installed
      • In the Windows Start menu, look for Outlook (classic) (icon without the New tag).
      • If it is not installed, install it using the guidance in You can't open classic Outlook on a new Windows PC (linked from the toggle article).
    2. Check why the toggle is missing (so classic can be used side‑by‑side) The toggle in classic Outlook can be hidden or unsupported for several reasons:
      • Windows must be Windows 10 build 1809 (17763) or higher.
      • Outlook must be a Microsoft 365 subscription build on a supported update channel (Current, Monthly Enterprise, or Semi‑Annual Enterprise (preview)). Nonsubscription versions such as Outlook 2019/2021 are not supported for the toggle.
      • Certain account types (POP or on‑premises Exchange only) in the classic profile can block the toggle.
      • Devices that are or were part of a sovereign network cannot switch to the new Outlook at all.
    3. Re‑enable the toggle if policy/registry is hiding it If classic Outlook is present but the toggle is hidden:
      • Check the registry key that controls the toggle visibility:
        • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General
        • HideNewOutlookToggle = 1 hides the toggle; set it to 0 and restart classic Outlook to show the toggle again.
      • If an admin policy hides the toggle, an admin must:
        1. Go to the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center (https://config.office.com/).
        2. Find Hide the "Try the new Outlook" toggle in Outlook and disable it.
    4. Force classic Outlook instead of New Outlook when launching If launching Outlook always redirects to New Outlook and the toggle is not visible in New Outlook:
      1. Open Registry Editor from the Start menu.
      2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences.
      3. Double‑click UseNewOutlook and set Value data to 0.
      4. From the Start menu, launch Outlook (classic) (the icon without the New tag).
    5. Optional: prevent Microsoft from switching to New Outlook again On some builds, hiding the toggle also prevents Microsoft from auto‑enabling New Outlook:
      • Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General set:
        • HideNewOutlookToggle (DWORD) = 1. This both hides the slider and stops New Outlook from being turned on by that toggle.

If classic Outlook is properly installed and the registry/policy are set as above, classic Outlook can be used without relying on the New Outlook toggle UI.

    Hi @K8Gee

Thank you for taking the time to explain your experience clearly and for sharing what you prefer for your day to day work.

Based on the details you shared, you would like to use classic Outlook on your new device, however the switch option is not available because the toggle does not appear.

This behavior commonly occurs when classic Outlook is not installed on the device, so there is no classic app to switch back to. Additionally, if you are using a work or school account, your organization may manage Outlook settings and disable the toggle for your tenant. As a result, you may only see the new Outlook experience until classic Outlook is installed and available to open from Windows.

Below are some workable options that might be the most appropriate for your current situation:

1/ Install classic Outlook so it is available on this device

    • Close Outlook and any Microsoft Office apps that are currently open.
    • Install classic Outlook by following Microsoft’s guidance here: Install or reinstall classic Outlook on a Windows PC - Microsoft Support
    • After the installation completes, open Windows Start, search for Outlook (classic), and then open it to complete sign in and mailbox setup.
    • For easier access, pin Outlook (classic) to Start or the taskbar so you can open it directly anytime.

2/ Run both versions side by side and launch classic Outlook directly from Start

    • Open Windows Start and search for Outlook.
    • If Outlook (classic) appears, open it directly from the app list instead of opening Outlook (new).
    • Next, pin both Outlook (new) and Outlook (classic) to the taskbar so you can switch quickly depending on the feature you need.
    • If you would like Microsoft’s recommended side by side experience, please use: Run new Outlook and classic Outlook side-by-side - Microsoft Support

3/ Advanced option if the toggle is missing and classic Outlook is installed: adjust the UseNewOutlook setting

    • Close Outlook completely.
    • Open Windows Start, search for Registry Editor, and then open it.
    • Browse to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences.
    • Locate UseNewOutlook, open it, and set the value data to 0.
    • Finally, return to Windows Start and open Outlook (classic) from the app list.
    • For Microsoft’s full guidance on this scenario, please reference: Toggle out of the new Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Support

Moreover, if your account is managed by an organization, the toggle can be intentionally hidden by policy, and in that scenario your IT admin is the right contact to confirm whether the toggle is disabled in your environment. Resolve Deployment Issues in the New Outlook for Windows - Outlook | Microsoft Learn

If you try the options above and you still do not see Outlook (classic) in Windows Start, please share a screenshot of your Start menu search results for Outlook, and I will tailor the next steps for your specific setup.

I hope this response has helped address your question and clarify the behavior you're experiencing. Please feel free to reply if you have any further questions, I would be happy to assist further.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. I look forward to continuing the conversation.
