To remove or turn off Copilot in Microsoft products on Windows, there are two main scenarios covered in the context: Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Copilot app on Windows itself.
- Turn off Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint (Microsoft 365 apps)
If still using Microsoft 365 apps on Windows or Mac and want Copilot gone from those apps:
A. Use the “Enable Copilot” checkbox (preferred where available)
On Windows (per app, per device):
- Open the app (for example, Word or Excel).
- Go to File > Options > Copilot.
- Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
- Select OK, then close and restart the app.
On Mac (per app, per device):
- In Word/Excel/PowerPoint, open the app menu (for example, Word menu).
- Go to Preferences > Authoring & Proofing Tools > Copilot.
- Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
- Close and restart the app.
Notes:
- This only affects that specific app on that specific device; repeat for each app and device where Copilot should be disabled.
- When Copilot is turned off this way, the Copilot icon on the ribbon is disabled and Copilot features cannot be used in that app.
- On Mac, the Copilot button may still appear on the ribbon but will be dimmed and inactive.
If the Enable Copilot checkbox is not visible, the app version may be older than the versions listed in the article; updating the apps may be required for that checkbox to appear.
B. Turn off Copilot via privacy settings (if checkbox not available or using older builds)
On Windows:
- In Word/Excel/PowerPoint, go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Under Connected experiences, clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
- Select OK, then close and restart the app.
On Mac:
- In Word/Excel/PowerPoint, go to Word (or app menu) > Preferences > Personal Settings > Privacy.
- In the Privacy dialog, go to Connected Experiences > Manage Connected Experiences.
- Clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
- Select OK, then close and restart the app.
This change only needs to be made in one Office app; it will apply to the others the next time they are opened.
C. Optional: remove the Copilot icon from the ribbon (visual only)
If Copilot is already disabled but the icon is visually distracting, the ribbon can be customized to remove the Copilot button. This only hides the icon; it does not control whether Copilot is enabled. For details, see the “Customize the ribbon in Office” link in the referenced article.
- Remove the Copilot app from Windows
If Copilot on Windows (the standalone app) is installed and should be removed:
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Copilot.
- Select … next to Copilot, then choose Uninstall.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Search for Copilot.
- Select Uninstall.
For advanced scenarios, a PowerShell script can be used to remove or prevent installation of the Copilot app (see the “Remove the Copilot app” link in the Windows Copilot management documentation). Copilot can be reinstalled later from Microsoft Store if needed.
- About intrusive Copilot icons in Word
For some recent Word builds, users reported an intrusive in-document Copilot logo that remained even after Copilot was disabled. Moderator guidance indicates that the 16.103.1 update removed that intrusive logo from the Word window. For affected builds, updating Office to at least 16.103.1 (for channels where it is available) resolves the persistent logo issue.
