Lock screen via Microsoft Remote Desktop shows no way to sign in

Hi there,

On one of my Windows 11 Pro machines, I am having a strange problem:

  • I successfully connect via Microsoft Remote Desktop (for macOS) and the session is automatically signed in.
  • When I'm away for a while, the machine switches to the lock screen but there are no buttons or text fields to "relogin" again.
  • Sending Ctrl-Alt-Del or Ctrl-Alt-End from the host machine doesn't bring up a sign-in dialog.
  • The machine has no camera and Windows Hello is not configurable.
  • Currently the only way of attaching to the session again is to close the connection and reconnect.
  • I could potentially change "If you've been away, when should Windows require your I sign in again?" setting to "Never" in Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options but I'd rather leave it as it is.

Any idea?

    Hello all,

I used WireShark to look what is flowing on my network and I found solution.
It is working on all of my affected computers - nearly 20, and half of them are
on terminal on different Server systems - so may be it will work for you also.

The problem is bugged/unstable/whatever RDP network detection for quality
and connectivity or something related to it in systems based on Windows 11 core.
Did not encounter this problem on systems based on Windows 10 core.

So you must do two things, to get rid of the problem. First is IMPORTANT second is OPTIONAL, but is better to set it,
you will get rid of problems with speed and picture quality changes as you work.

    1. IMPORTANT: Disable "Turn off Connect Time Detect and Continuous Network Detect"
This can be done by running gpedit.msc (elevated) (on domains tell admin to do it on domain LVL) and go to
    Local Computer Policy
    **Computer Configuration
    ****Administrative Templates
    ******Windows Components
    ********Remote Desktop Services
    **********Remote Desktop Session Host
    ************Connections
, there find policy: "Select network detection on the server" and set it to ENABLED
and from dropdown list under, select "Turn off Connect Time Detect and Continuous Network Detect".
Than you must force the update of group policy by: "gpupdate /force"
No restart needed while you force the policy update with success.
Picture is in Czech, but follow previous instructions.

    2. OPTIONAL: Change Quality settings in RDP Client APP and do not use Automatic, but select one. For me (I am still on good connection) "high speed wide..." is best. But select best for you and change the quality options as you need and want. Picture is in Czech but it is the EXPERIENCE tab (second from end) in english.

    Hope this helps to you.

RDP really needs you attention Microsoft.

Just to confirm the previous posts.
The problem is ONLY when you get your Remote PC locked and using MS account to access PC. If you use LOGOUT while ending RDP session, than you can connect again with no problem. If you just only disconect or close RDP session then you are stuck. Today I made test on fresh install new computer with Windows 11, with just all MS updates and nothing more. Also I can confirm the same problem on corporate level, with MS accounts connected to AZURE and RDP terminal. I have two accounts to use on this LVL to remote computers and I must ask corporate admin to login locally (via TeamViewer as admin user), before I can login via RDP as me!

This is bug on Microsoft side and needs to be repaired - ASAP - HEY MICROSOFT WAKE UP!
You are forcing users to switch from Windows 10 to 11 this year and you do not have working importatnt part of software!
This bug is easy to reproduce, just connect to RDP and than use LOCK instead of LOGOUT.

I am now having this problem, too, using Windows 10. I'm stuck on the "Unlock the PC" screen with no ability to type anything in. Every now and then I get a "The user name and password is incorrect. Try again." [OK] message, but it seems random. And there is never a PIN input field displayed.

The only way I got it to stop was to turn off Microsoft authentication on the remote machine and just use local authentication. Created a new local account independent of my Microsoft account. Now everything works again.

Not a solution, though. This is simply a workaround. Hey Microsoft, any update on this?

    Hi Haijian,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, non of it worked. I've created a brief screen recording. Here I'm connected to a Windows 11 Pro machine and lock it with Command-L (Windows-L on a PC). There's no way for me to unlock it again.

In the screen recording I tried Ctrl-Option-Del, Ctrl-Option-End and even used the on-screen keyboard.

This is super annoying. And it happens on all current Windows machines.

    Hello    Ralf Rottmann,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue. Here are a few possible solutions:

    1. Try disabling the "Use all my monitors for the remote session" option in the Microsoft Remote Desktop settings. This may help resolve the issue with the lock screen.

2.Try disabling the "Windows Hello" feature in the Sign-in options. This can sometimes cause issues with the lock screen as well.

    1. Check if the "Interactive logon: Do not display last user name" policy is enabled on the Windows 11 Pro machine. If it is enabled, try disabling it and see if the lock screen issue is resolved.
    2. Try updating the Remote Desktop client on your macOS machine to the latest version. This may help resolve any compatibility issues with Windows 11 Pro.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Haijian Shan
