Microsoft Print to PDF stops working on 2016 RDSH after installing KB4586830

I have a deployment of 7 2016 RDSH servers.
After installing KB4586830 Microsoft Print to PDF and Microsoft XPS Write stops working.
If I uninstall KB4586830 it fixes the issue.

Does anyone have a solution other than uninstalling the security patches?

Last week we patched our Server 2016 RDS farm for the first time since October.
KB4598243 was installed which supersedes the aforementioned KB4586830.

We are, for the first time, also exhibiting Microsoft Print to PDF errors.
When printing from Word: "Word cannot print due to a problem with the printer setup."

Removed KB4598243 and issue is immediately resolved.

Hi,

I have do a lab test to install KB4586830 on one 2016 Server and remote connect to it. I got no issue. So, the issue should not be related to this KB.

After researching, I found KB4457127 which contains the information of your issue.

Addresses an issue that causes printing to an open or existing file to fail without displaying an error message. This issue occurs when using Microsoft Print to PDF or XPS Document Writer.

Please run powershell command "get-hotfix" to show the KB list you have installed. And try to install KB4457127 to see if you could resolve the issue.

It is also happening on a stand alone RDSH not using UPDs that I just checked. Printing to One Note works.


I cannot find KB4457127 to try, it is not in the catalog.

Is this stand alone RDSH also install KB4586830 and then Microsoft Print to PDF and Microsoft XPS Write stops working?Uninstall the KB, the issue disappear, right?

And does the issue only occur when remoting connect to the RDSH or also occur when locally login onto the server?

It also happens when using the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection.

Yes, the issue disappears when I uninstall the update. It is repeatable.

Hi,

None of that is really applicable to Server 2016.
For example Method 2: "Turn Windows features on or off" brings up Server Manager Roles and Features

The print driver will not install after it is removed. (driver not available)

Also I noticed
The
(Get-PrinterDriver -name "Microsoft Print To PDF").ConfigFile
parameter is empty on the servers that don't work and present on the servers that do.

Même problème rencontré sur 2 rdsh sur 15.
Voilà ce que j'ai fait pour rétablir ma situation
Avec patch PrintToPDF ko
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features
puis
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features
finit en erreur
remove kb reboot
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features
OK
PrintToPDF ok
install kb reboot
Avec patch PrintToPDF OK

I tried your method on 3 different servers without luck.
It always works if I remove the patch and doesn't when I re-add the patch.

Hi,

On the problematic servers, please check if there are files under below locations.

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\prnms003.inf_amd64_
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\prnms009.inf_amd64_

If there is no file, you will need to copy the files from working machines to the problematic machines. And the dll file in the folders need to be registered via regsvr32.

Another thing you can try is to first uninstall the third party print driver if there is any, and then install the KB to see if the issue persists.

Nope. I am hoping this months patch fixes it.

No, I had this exact issue in November of 2018. I uninstalled the update that broke it and installed the next months update. I hope that fixes it again this time.

We've had this problem at various points over the last year with our RDS servers (Server 2016). Currently have the problem on 1 of our 6 RDS machines. Both the patch mentioned and the patch that supersedes it (KB4601318) create the problem on the server that is implicated with the issue mentioned above. Have a ticket open with Microsoft, but it appears to have been swept under the rug. We've rebuilt two servers this year because of this exact problem, and are dangerously close to just moving to a third party print to pdf utility because of the ongoing issues with Cumulative Updates and RDS servers. If anyone has any resolution to this, sounds like plenty of people will be thankful.

We had removed the updates from the server. about 2 weeks ago an update installed to our windows 10 workstations that broke this again. After testing, I found that Remote pdf printing now works if both the servers and workstations are updated. NOTE: our configuration is a little different. We are running windows server 2012 R2 (Now with all the latest updates) and Windows 10 1909 or windows 10 20h2 with all the latest updates.
