Disk Optimization IS NOT Running Automatically Properly

Eddie, recall my stressing the importance of showing last run date in thread for disk optimization. Not positive if this started with 19042.508 /546

First noticed this in my main system last week running 20H2 (non-insider). Disk Optimization is not running automatically, had about 13 days showing last run, settings are at default to run weekly. Did a manual run back last week.

This snapshot is from a virtual machine 20H2 that I test software on daily. Both devices are kept current with builds.

This snapshot is from my main system today. Have to give it couple more days to verify and will file a FBH report at that time and update this thread. Please advise if there is anything else I can add with FBH report.

And one more thing can you enable Task Scheduler history on the VM?

Also just FYI I'm off the next couple of days so if you don't see me respond I'm not ignoring it :)

Hi Eddie, hope you had a great long weekend.

There is an issue regarding Disk Optimization not running properly in VMware. The Host is on SSD, the Guest is on HDD. Had to resort to a snapshot over month old, thus the 09/16 start date which was run manually.

According to Task Scheduler, the Scheduled Defrag did run 10/25. Optimize Drives does reflect this on the System Reserved partition but not the C:Drive itself.

Feedback Hub Link via VM: https://aka.ms/AAa3662

    Files included in FBH:

    -Application.evtx

    -Windows-TaskScheduler%4Maintenance.evtx

    -Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler%4Operational.evtx

    Procedure for clarity:

-Base snapshot 19042.508 offline, first step enabled Task Scheduler history

-updated Net, Flash via msu file

-updated via dism CU kb4580364 to 19042.608

-put online, updated Windows Security definitions and 33 Store Apps

-signed in, joined Insider Beta channel

    -10 more Store apps updated

Pictures provided are from offline stage, no change online.

Ran Windows Security quick scan, Storage Sense with no manual Optimization. Saved snapshot.

    Regards,

I did have a great weekend, thanks!

I'll pass this and the feedback along to the team and let you know when I hear back.

    Eddie,

Apologize for going off topic, the Insider team needs to sit down with the Edge team regarding tiny office web apps. This has progressed from Dev channel right down to current Release 20H2.

Icons are normal up to opening Edge C. They shrink instantly..

    Regards,

They are aware are and looking into it. Thanks.

Here is the link to my feedback regarding the Optimize Drives settings not being retained between builds.

    https://aka.ms/AAa0zb8

Can you check and see if this is working for you now on the latest build (20251)? I was originally able to repro it on my device, but now it seems it's keeping my changes. Thanks.

If I understand this correctly, does Optimization only trim once per 30 days or is it actually going to do a defrag (continuous files). That part was really not clear:

    Defrag

    Regards,

Let me confirm with the Dev.

Also on the VM you shared a screenshot on in your OP, can you file the feedback from that device as well and include the Application event log (you may have to manually save and attach it.) We'd like to confirm what occurred on that device.

And one more thing can you enable Task Scheduler history on the VM?

    Hi Eddie,

Did you get clarification of the 30 day cycle regarding SSD of Trim vs Defrag (continuous files). One would assume it would run Trim, the Document you posted that was revised leaves doubt on this.

At one time, used Speed Disk (Norton) every few months to run Defrag just for the continuous files rather than Trim on SSD. There was a slight noticeable speed improvement overall.

I have not heard back. I think the feature owner may have been out of the office. I will follow back up.
