Teams: Register Teams as the chat app for Office setting

Hi,

Hope you're alright and generally coping.
We have started rolling out Teams to our organisation. We are still running Skype unconnected to Teams, is this the island configuration?

My question is about the "Register Teams as the chat app for Office" setting. When it is ticked, for some members of our Team, after a reboot this setting reverts to unticked.

I found personally that it stayed ticked after a reboot. However I then rechecked the setting after we had a team meeting over audio call and it had reverted to unticked.

Not sure if that is linked to some sync in the background or having joined the meeting that may cause it to revert. I have ticked it again and will keep an eye on if it unticks in the day.

Please can you advise as to what's going on? Does this setting require admin permissions to stay set? We are trying to gauge if we can post advice on our internal forum for general users to be able to set this?

Any help is much appreciated. Good luck with everything generally.

Thanks, best wishes,

Neil O'Donnell

    Hi NeiloDonnell-4508!

==We are still running Skype unconnected to Teams, is this the island configuration?

Do you mean you are running Skype for Business Online and still not upgraded to Teams?

In my understanding, it is not the island configuration because your Skype for Business is still unconnected to Teams. In Island mode, Users in an existing Skype for Business organization are introduced to Teams so that they can use both clients during a transitional phase. For more details about island mode, you can learn from:

== Please can you advise as to what’s going on? Does this setting require admin permissions to stay set?

Do you mean this setting in your Teams client like the following picture?

This setting is no need for Administrator setting it. Users can set this option by themselves.
I did a test in my environment. I ticked the setting in Teams client and restart the Office application. Then we start a new meeting (Calendar->Meet now->invite participants) and see if the setting has changed, but it seems nothing happened.

In this case, it recommends you try to restart the Office application after setting this option and see if this issue still exists. If there is no luck, you can try to clear the client cache to see if it can be fixed.

    Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for your reply. Yes it is the setting you mention in the picture.

Sorry Island was my guess, no we haven't linked Skype to Teams, we will be phasing Skype out.

I had initially tried logging out of Teams and logging back into it, it stayed set on my machine. Also for me it stayed set after a reboot but then unticked at some point, I noticed after coming out of a meeting.

A couple of my colleagues found after a reboot their chat app option in Teams has unticked again.

Admin authorisation was a guess, I didn't think so much as it was initially persistently set for me and isn't consistent across all or team's accounts.

Is there anything else you might guess at what's happening? We have GP seettings running at logon and currently we all connect through a VPN. Could any of this affect it?

Thanks for your advice. All the best,

    Neil O'Donnell

Sorry just to add, have checked with my colleague and the issue with the tickbox unticking isn't specifically after a reboot, just that it seems to be unticking spopradically for all of us. Will let you know how we get on with clearing the cache still though.
    Thanks

Sorry Jimmy, please can you advise if it's possible to clear the Teams client cache without losing the chat and file history? Or does it recreate it from online?
