Microsoft Edge changed .xml to 'Microsoft Edge HTML Document' files.

I was trying to do reagentc /enable in the SMD after formating my Disk because I was having trouble installing the new security update. But it says that Windows RE wasn´t found, but, somehow, the .XML file changed their file type to 'Microsoft Edge HTML Document'

I'd like to change the file type back to .XML. What app should I choose for 'default open app' since is in the System32 Recovery file

Hi FERNANDEZ! My name is David. I am a user of Microsoft products like you, and it is a pleasure to greet you.

Responding to your question, keep in mind that files with the .XML extension remain the same even when the selected code editor is Microsoft Edge, which is set by default. This is because this browser can open this type of file to view its content.

If you go to C:\Windows\System32 and look for any file with the .XML extension, right-clicking and selecting properties will show you that it appears as "Microsoft Edge HTML Document (.xml)." The first section indicates the application with which the file is opened, and what appears in parentheses is the extension.

If your Windows displays it this way, there is no issue with the default application for opening this type of file. Note that Notepad can also be used to open these files, or any other text editor will work too.

In summary, you can leave Microsoft Edge as the default application for opening this type of file since it does not affect its functionality when Windows needs any of them.

Let me know if the shared information has been helpful. Regards.

Hi FERNANDEZ! Thank you for staying in touch and for the additional information related to your issue.

In this case, I would like to know if the steps you followed for the security update issue were those outlined in the following link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb502.... If so, to assist you more effectively, I would need you to share screenshots of the results of the following steps with me:

    1. Disk Manager screenshot: Go to the Start menu and search for "create and format hard disk partitions," launch the application, and take a screenshot of this window.
    2. CMD steps screenshot: Launch CMD as an administrator and then proceed to execute each command described in the link mentioned earlier:
    • reagentc /info
    • reagentc /disable
    • diskpart
    • list disk (take a screenshot up to this point)

If you know the disk where Windows is installed or if you only have Disk 0 in the list of disks, run:

    • sel disk 0
    • list part (take a screenshot of this result)

Please share the requested information to identify where the problem might be.

From the screenshots you've shared with me, the first one indicates that it's highly likely that the WinRe partition is not created, hence it cannot start. Regarding the second screenshot, what appears there doesn't specifically relate to the recovery partition since it has its own disk space. That's why I'm requesting the Disk Manager screenshot.

I'll be waiting for your response with the requested images. Regards.

Hi FERNANDEZ! Thanks for staying in touch and for the screenshots. Don't worry, there's no issue with the language.

In this case, I'd like to check the outputs of the other command lines, as from what I could see in the screenshots you shared, the partition was created successfully and is marked both in Disk Manager and the list of partitions.

In this instance, we can skip checking the extension of the WinRe partition as it has sufficient space. Please run the following lines right after the ones I've already shared with you and share with me the results they return:

    • sel part 4
    • delete partition override
    • create partition primary id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
    • gpt attributes =0x8000000000000001
    • format quick fs=ntfs label=”Windows RE tools”
    • list vol
    • exit
    • reagentc /enable
    • reagentc /info

Please share the results with me to try to identify where the error may be occurring when attempting to start WinRe from the command line. I'll be waiting for your response. Regards.
