Looks like the same issue is preventing Windows 11 from installing now, so we're going to be stuck in a loop of failed phantom installation routines forever. Thanks a bunch, Microsoft....

I'd be very surprised if this wasn't related to the issues updating Windows 10 that we've all been having.

****Hi, I failed to install all (last) updates in W.-10: KB5004237, /...4296, KB 5005033, KB 5005101,/KB 5539/..5565/...5611. but my Windows 10-Version 21 H1 - on Oct. 5 I was able to install/update successfully the Window 11. The Update is running well. I used the "Window11-Assistant-update"-Tool which I downloaded from (CHIP.de/Computerbil.de)-trusted archive. It went with 3 steps and was finished a bit more than 2 hours.****
Because I have only ar. 125 GB totally usable Space on my small Lenovo Desktop and my still available space was only less than 10 GB I erased more than 2/3 of my installed programs and convert them in "Portable-Versions". So I had additional more than 20 GB more free space and much more free than the recommended 15-25 GB for the Installation/-Upgrade to Windows 11!
Afterwards I connected a 500 GB Mini USB-Flash-Drive permanently on my very fast USB-C-Drive and installed the said portable programs. I am using (with a desktop-Icon) a Program which opens with one Click the installed portable Programs- with another Click (after I have chosen the wanted program) the program which I want to use.

Windows 11 via the Update Assistant, Media Creation tool or the ISO all failed. It would get to a certain point on rebooting and then report an error and roll back.

The only way this worked is to reinstall Windows 10. I didn't just install Windows 11 as I don't have a Windows 11 Pro key nor do I want to get one and I doubt that my old Windows 7 key would work.

I had to do a full re-install of Windows 10; it would let me save files and data. To do that, I would have to go through Windows Update and runs the risk of it failing. Re-installing fixes things as I could then apply all of the updates, and there were a lot of them.

So my guess and it's only a guess, there was a past update that failed to install and it's expected. But that update doesn't list as being failed or doesn't list at all (optional but not optional?).

Not suggesting you should do a re-install but it saves this endless cycle of updates failing. Just gotta deal with the hassles of re-installing everything else you have. Heh you were always looking for an excude to declutter?
