I found the Microsoft Word program on PC the best word processor by far.

I haven't tested the online version of Microsoft Office yet, but I expect it to be a lot more functional, and bug-free, than their Android app.

I suspect you've probably heard of LibreOffice, or even Google Docs, as possible alternatives.

If not, you could give them a try, LibreOffice is open source, so it's possibly safer than the proprietary Microsoft Office, and is compatible with Microsoft Office files.

I'm having the same issue. I have a pixel 2. When I tried to delete a word file from my mobile Word app, an error message pops up stating I dont have permission to delete the file downloaded in the RECENT category.

I share your frustration over this inconvenience! I found the answer given just a few spots above this post was very simple (I already had Download Mgr) and allowed me to delete third-party created docs. Just go to your Download Mgr and press on any file to get the tag circles to appear beside all the files. Click on all the ones you want to delete and then press the Delete word at top of page. Done!

Yet again, this does not delete the files stored in Word's data folder unless you have a rooted phone (which is by default assumed not).

I was having this problem as well. On both excel and word. Open any file (doesnt matter word or excel). Click top right, 3 dots, settings, scroll to bottom, hit reset. Removed all of the files that I couldnt manually delete and automatically readded everything from my phone and one drive.
