SharePoint upload fails 'error in the application'

Am attempting to upload files to SharePoint of several clients.

Upload begins normally. After 2 - 4 mb of data transferred upload resets to 0 and begins again.

Upload continues normally until half of file is uploaded (eg 21.2mb of 42.4mb file)

Upload stops.

Approx. 5 minutes later error message "error in the application" appears.

Upload stopped.

File is displayed in SharePoint folder, but contains no data.

    Hi WilliamMecke,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

From your description, it seems that you are trying uploading files to SharePoint Online Document library, however, it failed and it shows files in SharePoint folder but it doesn’t contain any data.

May I know if my understanding is right? If so, we do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it. And we have tested it on our side and we cannot reproduce the same situation with yours, and it works fine on our side.

Given this situation, we’d give you some suggestions below and hope that will help you:

    1. You can change another browser to check if the same problem will occur.
    2. You can change another network environment to check if the same problem will occur.

At the same time, to better understand your situation, could you provide the information below?

    1. You mentioned “Am attempting to upload files to SharePoint of several clients”, may I know if you are using SharePoint Online or SharePoint Server?
    2. Could you provide the screenshot of error message?
    3. May I know if you uploaded files via clicking Upload in SharePoint? May I know if the other colleagues and files have the same problem?
    4. May I know if the other SharePoint Document library have the same problem?

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

I have been having the same issue uploading via web for the past two weeks. The upload gets about to the halfway mark - hangs for 3-4 minutes and the produces the error below.

This is primarily happening with image heavy PowerPoint files where image compression has been applied.

Given this situation, we’d give you some suggestions below and hope that will help you:

    1. You can change another browser to check if the same problem will occur.
Have tried with Chrome, Firefox and Edge. All produce same issue.
    2. You can change another network environment to check if the same problem will occur.
Not an option. Am working from home office, uploading to two different company's SharePoints.

At the same time, to better understand your situation, could you provide the information below?

    1. You mentioned “Am attempting to upload files to SharePoint of several clients”, may I know if you are using SharePoint Online or SharePoint Server?
Company provides link to folder. I open link, try to upload there. Do not know if it is SharePoint Online or SharePoint Server. If this is important, please provide directions for determining which I am using.
    2. Could you provide the screenshot of error message? No. Error message is what it is "Error in the application." Will not abuse my clients' websites to produce a message unnecessarily.
    3. May I know if you uploaded files via clicking Upload in SharePoint? May I know if the other colleagues and files have the same problem?
Have tried both clicking upload and dragging and dropping. Both fail for all files tried. There are no other colleagues using my computer from my home. Am not aware of others having these issues.
    4. May I know if the other SharePoint Document library have the same problem?
Attempting to upload to each client produces same problem.

Additional information: Uploading small - 15mb files seems to avoid this problem, as does zipping files - even when zipping only reduces file size by 2% or so.

    Hi WilliamMecke,

We appreciate that you posted back and confirmed the scenario with us. We also appreciate that you spent your precious time doing those tests.

We have checked the information you provided, and it seems that all SharePoint libraries have the same problem, and you have tried all browsers and same problem still occurs.

At the same time, this issue doesn’t occur when you uploaded small files.

May I know if the summarize above is right? If so, we have tested it on our side and we cannot reproduce the same situation as yours, and recently, we didn’t receive any reports or notifications related to this issue, so we assume this issue may be related to your tenant or your local environment.

So to narrow down this issue is related to your tenant or your local environment, we still want to confirm the information below with you:

    1. To narrow down this issue is related to your tenant, you can contact your colleagues and let them test it on their side to check if they will encounter the same problem. They don’t need to go to your home to test on your home, they can just test it on their own side.
    2. To narrow down this issue is related to your local environment, we’d suggest you go to Office 365 portal > click OneDrive to go to OneDrive for business, then you can upload the same files again to check if you can upload them successfully.

At the same time, we’d also suggest you use OneDrive sync client to check if you can use this tool to sync files to your SharePoint document libraries, for your reference: Sync files with OneDrive in Windows

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Best Regards,

    Sukie
