Excel web app return error after hitting find next / find all.

Hello,

What does this type of error mean (photo below)? And how do I resolve it? I don't have much technical background in codes and the likes. But this error appears after I hit "Find Next" / "Find All" in an attempt to search for a specific data around the sheet. Also, it only appears when the data I search is surely on the sheet. But if not on the sheet, it will return the usual "could not find...". It's getting more frequent this week. Hope it does not worsen. Btw, I'm using the web app because sometimes we collaborate as a team and editing via desktop app is not our best option.

P.S. sometimes the error goes away on its own after a few mins of not using the sheet although left open.. But it does not give the confidence that the sheet I'm working on is already okay and working.

Hope to get some answers / advice.

Thanks,

Fam

    Hi

Thank you for posting the thread on our forum.

    1. Based on your description, it seems that you will get the error message after you hitting find next / find all in a specific sheet. ( If my understanding is incorrect, please feel free to post back and let me know).
    2. In order to help us narrown down the issue and troubleshooting further, please try the following steps:
    • Since the error message just happen in a specific sheet, please create a new workbook and copy all the contents of the sheet to the new sheet then to see if the issue will happen again.
    • Try to change a different browser or use inprivate window to see the result.
    • Ask other users to use find&replace funtion and to see if they also have this issue.
    • To make sure if the issue was releated to the specific sheet, please try to open in Excel clien t to see if the issue will happen agian.
    1. We appreciate your understanding that sometimes the initial suggestions may not resolve the problem very soon. However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation. So, Please kindly provide more information below to let us work further.
    • May I know if the sheet include some complex formulas or macros?
    • If it's convenient to you, can you share a copy of the sheet to us so that we can do a test on llour end to find the root cause.

Really appreciate your patience and understanding. We're looking forward to your reply.

    Best regards,

    Stacey

    Hi

    Thanks for your quick response.

Based on your description, may I know if you tried the suggestion in above reply? Are they helpful in your situation?

Since you mentioned that the sheet includes the Power Query, so we did a test in our end >create a workbook with the power query>then open the file in Excel for web>then use the Find function and we can find the data what we wanted without error as the screenshot below:

We suggest you try to create a new sheet without power Query and  then to check the result. (This way can help us narrow down if the issue was related to the Power Query)

Meanwhile, can you try to copy the whole content to another workbook to see if the issue will happen again?

Since we can’t reproduce the problem you described, in order to help us troubleshooting and find the root cause, we want  to know if it’s convenient to you that to share a copy or an example file of the affected workbook to us so that we can do a test in our end to find the reason?(You can upload the file to your onedrive and copy the link then post here)

We’re looking forward to your response and we really hope we can help you solve your problem as soon as possible.

Appreciate your patience and understanding again! Have a good day!

    Best regards,

    Stacey

    Hi Stacey,

Here are your suggestions from above (italicized):

    • Since the error message just happen in a specific sheet, please create a new workbook and copy all the contents of the sheet to the new sheet then to see if the issue will happen again.
      • Yes it happened again. At some point it didn't but it happens again then not.
    • Try to change a different browser or use inprivate window to see the result.
      • On my end it worked but on my colleagues' end it did not.
    • Ask other users to use find&replace funtion and to see if they also have this issue.
      • yes they also have the same issue. Sometimes it's okay and working, then error happens again
    • To make sure if the issue was releated to the specific sheet, please try to open in Excel clien t to see if the issue will happen agian.
      • Just to clarify, is Excel client = excel desktop app or it's really another excel thing? Sorry I was not able to find the answer on the internet about excel client

In addition, we also experience this error where we can't open it at all...

    Hi

I‘m reading your reply carefully and we're appreciate that you spent your precious time doing the tests and provided the detailed information to us.

From the file you shared to us, we just can view it but we have no edit permision so we couldn't test , if it's convenient to you, can you share the file with edit permission to us so that we can do a test.

Meanwhile, the suggestion try to open in Excel clien t to see if the issue will happen agian means that we suggest you try to open the file in Excel Desktop to see if the file can work well.

Since you mentioned other users also have the problem with the file , and we also noticed the workbook includes many sheets and some formulas and query table, maybe because teh file size was so large caused the file crush. we suggest you try to reduce teh file size to check the result, refer to Reduce the file size of your Excel spreadsheets (microsoft.com)

We're really appreciate your patience and understanding. We'll try our best to solve your problem, which is our duty.

We're looking forward to your reply! Have a good day!

    Best regards,

    Stacey
