Generating Audit Log Reports in SharePoint Site

Hi everyone,

I'm encountering an issue with generating audit log reports for my SharePoint Online site. I need to track user activities such as views, edits, and deletions of documents and items within the site.

I've tried enabling audit log reporting but am unsure of the correct steps to configure it properly. Specifically, I'm looking for guidance on:

  1. Enabling and Configuring Audit Log Reports: What are the exact steps to enable and configure audit logging in SharePoint Online?
  2. Access and Permissions: Are there any specific permissions required to access and generate these reports?
  3. Scheduling Reports: Is it possible to schedule these reports to be generated and sent automatically?
  4. Customizing Audit Events: How can I customize the types of events that are included in the audit log?

Any detailed steps or references to relevant documentation would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

    Dear Bharti Rajput,

Good day. Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, you want to get some information about Audit Log on SharePoint Online.

I found some official articles that might help you understand Audit Log better.

These documents explain how to enable and use the Audit Log:

Turn auditing on or off | Microsoft Learn

Export, configure, and view audit log records | Microsoft Learn

This document details the requirements that can be met by Audit Log: View audit log reports - Microsoft Support

And as far as I know, only the relevant administrators have access to the audit logs and can generate them.

Thank you for your time and patience.

    Sincerely,

Claire Guo MSFT Thank you for your response.

I have already enabled the audit log option in our SharePoint Online site. However, when I try to generate the "Content View" report, it shows "No report generated." Please find the attached screenshot for your reference.

Could you please assist with this issue?

    Dear Bharti Rajput,

    Thank you for posting back.

Based on the screenshot you provided, the general reason for this could be that the appropriate audit log was not found at that time. Please try the following steps and check if it works for you:

    1. Please extend the timeline accordingly to see if the appropriate audit logs are being generated.
    2. Try to change another Browser and check if it generates the audit logs.

Thank you for your patience and time.

    Sincerely,

Claire Guo MSFT Thank you for your response.

I have tried changing to another browser, but I am still experiencing the same issue with missing audit logs. Could you please suggest any additional troubleshooting steps or possible solutions to resolve this problem?

    Dear Bharti Rajput,

    Thank you for patient update.

Since Audit Log is running successfully according to the screenshot you provided, this usually happens because there is no corresponding data to generate. As far as I know, Audit Log can only generate the corresponding report after it is enabled. If you can confirm that there are reports available for the timeline you selected, I'm afraid this issue needs to be investigated from the backend side via remote assistance and collect the background logs.

As this Forum community has limited resources, the backend support team there has more permission than us, they have more resources to investigate the issue from the backend, they have Escalate channel to escalate your issue to check more and collect log reports for the root cause.
