Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
Yes. Classic Outlook can still be used even when the New Outlook toggle is missing, if the environment supports it.
- Verify classic Outlook is installed
- In the Windows Start menu, look for Outlook (classic) (icon without the New tag).
- If it is not installed, install it using the guidance in You can't open classic Outlook on a new Windows PC (linked from the toggle article).
- Check why the toggle is missing (so classic can be used side‑by‑side)
The toggle in classic Outlook can be hidden or unsupported for several reasons:
- Windows must be Windows 10 build 1809 (17763) or higher.
- Outlook must be a Microsoft 365 subscription build on a supported update channel (Current, Monthly Enterprise, or Semi‑Annual Enterprise (preview)). Nonsubscription versions such as Outlook 2019/2021 are not supported for the toggle.
- Certain account types (POP or on‑premises Exchange only) in the classic profile can block the toggle.
- Devices that are or were part of a sovereign network cannot switch to the new Outlook at all.
- Re‑enable the toggle if policy/registry is hiding it
If classic Outlook is present but the toggle is hidden:
- Check the registry key that controls the toggle visibility:
-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General -
HideNewOutlookToggle= 1 hides the toggle; set it to 0 and restart classic Outlook to show the toggle again.
-
- If an admin policy hides the toggle, an admin must:
- Go to the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center (https://config.office.com/).
- Find Hide the "Try the new Outlook" toggle in Outlook and disable it.
- Check the registry key that controls the toggle visibility:
- Force classic Outlook instead of New Outlook when launching
If launching Outlook always redirects to New Outlook and the toggle is not visible in New Outlook:
- Open Registry Editor from the Start menu.
- Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences. - Double‑click UseNewOutlook and set Value data to 0.
- From the Start menu, launch Outlook (classic) (the icon without the New tag).
- Optional: prevent Microsoft from switching to New Outlook again
On some builds, hiding the toggle also prevents Microsoft from auto‑enabling New Outlook:
- Under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\Generalset:-
HideNewOutlookToggle(DWORD) = 1. This both hides the slider and stops New Outlook from being turned on by that toggle.
-
- Under
If classic Outlook is properly installed and the registry/policy are set as above, classic Outlook can be used without relying on the New Outlook toggle UI.
