I purchased a Windows 11 license 2 weeks ago before I decided to upgrade my motherboard and CPU, and now it's telling me that my license has already been used "on another product." How do I re-activate this?

1

Open the Settings App.
Go to the activation settings.

Select Troubleshoot, then select 'I changed my hardware'.

On the resulting list, you should find the previously activated device, select that to move the licence to the new hardware.

2

If that process is not successful, try the process provided on this link.

Because the motherboard and CPU were changed, Windows now sees this as a different device and the existing digital license no longer matches the new hardware. Reactivation depends on whether the license is linked to a Microsoft account or uses a product key.

Follow these steps on the upgraded PC (Windows 11):

    1. Confirm activation status and edition
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      • Note the edition (for example, Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro). The same edition must be installed for the license to reactivate.
    2. If the license is a digital license linked to a Microsoft account
      • On the same Activation page, if not already linked, select Add an account, sign in with the same Microsoft account used when the license was first activated, and confirm the message changes to Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account on the original hardware.
      • After the hardware change, if Windows now shows as not activated, run the Activation troubleshooter:
        1. Sign in as an administrator.
        2. Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
        3. When it shows Windows can’t be activated on your device, select I changed hardware on this device recently, then Next.
        4. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the original activation.
        5. From the list of devices linked to that account, select the one that corresponds to the current PC and check This is the device I’m using right now.
        6. Select Activate.
If the troubleshooter cannot find the device or still fails, contact Microsoft Support so they can locate the digital license on the account and reactivate it for the new hardware, as recommended in similar activation cases.
    3. If the license is a product key (retail purchase)
      • On the upgraded PC, go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
      • Enter the Windows 11 product key that was purchased two weeks ago and complete activation.
      • If activation still fails with the “already used on another device” message, use phone activation or contact Microsoft Support so the retail key can be reassigned to the new hardware, as other users have done successfully.

If there is no accessible digital license or product key, a new Windows 11 digital license can be purchased from Settings > System > Activation > Go to Store.
