Dear sir/madam

I am writing to report an issues with the microphone on my laptop. Whenever I make calls using device, the audio quality becomes very disturbing for the person on the other end. They are unable to hear my voice clearly, and random background noises are transmitted instead.

This issue occurs frequently and makes communication difficult, especially during important calls. I have checked basic settings, but the problem still persists.

I kindly request you to look into this matter and provide a suitable solutions as soon as possible..

Thank you for your attention.

Yours sincerely.

    Hi Nischal Karki,

Poor microphone quality can make calls almost impossible, especially when others mostly hear noise instead of your voice. The Q&A Assist has already provided the core troubleshooting steps, but if they don’t work, here are some additional checks:

1 - Disable audio enhancements / noise effects

    • Go to Settings > System > Sound > Input > Select your microphone
    • Turn Audio enhancements to OFF (or try other options if it’s already off)
    • If you see any noise/echo/voice effects > temporarily disable them to test.

    2 - Disable exclusive control

    • Press Win + R > type mmsys.cpl > press Enter
    • Open Recording tab > Select microphone > Properties
    • Under Advanced tab, uncheck (or check to test if the option was off)
      • Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device
      • Give exclusive mode applications priority
      • Enable audio enhancements
    • Apply and restart the PC.

3 - Check the call app settings

    • Open Sound Recorder > record your voice in a quiet room.
      • Or use another application to make the calls
      • E.g. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.
    • If it sounds good, there's a chance the app was the cause of issue.
    • Open the app you used for call > Settings > check Audio / Input options.

If you're not sure, let me know which app you're using, and confirm whether this happens only for calls with this app or with other apps too. Feel free to share your laptop brand too, as it will help more if this is hardware issue.

Follow these steps in Windows 11 to improve microphone audio quality and reduce background noise:

    1. Check the physical microphone
    • If using a headset, make sure the microphone is not muted on the device (hardware Mute button or switch).
    • Ensure the microphone is positioned close to the mouth and not rubbing against clothing or other objects.
    1. Make sure the correct input device is selected
    1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Under Input, go to Choose a device for speaking or recording and select the laptop’s built‑in microphone or the headset microphone (not a virtual or unused device).
    3. To test it, select the > to the right of the device.
    4. On the properties page, select Start test under Microphone test and speak normally.
    5. Select Stop test, then choose Play under Recorded sample to hear how it sounds.
      • If the recording is unclear or full of background noise, adjust the Input volume slider and repeat the test until the voice is clear.
    1. Verify apps have permission to use the microphone
    1. Select Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
    2. Select Change, then turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
    3. Under Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your microphone, turn on access for calling/meeting apps being used.
    4. Make sure Allow desktop apps to access your microphone is set to On so classic desktop apps (for example, some VoIP or meeting tools) can use it.
    1. Run the built‑in troubleshooter
    1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Scroll down to Advanced and choose Input devices under Troubleshoot common sound problems.
    3. Follow the on‑screen steps. This can automatically detect and fix some microphone configuration issues.
    1. Reinstall or update audio drivers if the device behaves abnormally If the microphone is detected but behaves inconsistently, reinstalling the audio driver can help:
    1. Right‑click the Start button and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right‑click the audio device used for the microphone and select Uninstall device.
    4. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
    5. Restart the computer. Windows will attempt to reinstall the audio devices and drivers automatically.
    6. If needed, in Device Manager, right‑click Sound, video and game controllers and select Scan for hardware changes, then right‑click the audio driver and select Update driver.

If, after these steps, the test recording in Windows still sounds mostly like background noise and not the voice, the microphone hardware itself (built‑in mic or headset) may be faulty and should be tested on another device or checked by a technician.
