Office 2021 Mac not activating (forces Microsoft 365 subscription prompt)

I have a valid Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021 licence linked to my Microsoft account (confirmed under Services & Subscriptions). However, on my Mac, Word is incorrectly activating as Microsoft 365 and is stuck in “view only” mode with subscription prompts.

Despite the licence being visible on my account, Office will not recognise it on the device.

I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Office for Mac multiple times
  • Reinstalled from my Microsoft account (Services & Subscriptions page)
  • Signed in with the correct Microsoft account that shows Office 2021
  • Signed out of and removed a previous university Microsoft account from Word
  • Checked Keychain Access and removed Microsoft Office-related entries (including Microsoft Office Identities, ADAL, MSAL, OneAuth, and Microsoft credentials)
  • Deleted Office preference and licensing files from:
    • ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office
    • ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.plist
  • Deleted Office container files from ~/Library/Containers/ (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)
  • Reset Office licensing state and restarted the Mac multiple times
  • Attempted “Refresh Licence” inside Word
  • Encountered repeated error: “Unable to connect to licensing helper”
  • Word continues to display “Subscription required to edit and save” and Microsoft 365 activation prompts

It appears the Mac installation is stuck in a Microsoft 365 licensing state or there is a device/account licensing binding issue. Could you please reset the activation state for my account and device, or re-issue the Office 2021 activation binding?

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Have you tried the Microsoft Office License Removal Tool?

Download the Office License Removal Tool from the official Microsoft website here-

How to remove Office license files on a Mac

This tool will remove all previous traces of the Office license and then reactivate your Office 2021 license.

    =======================================================================

If you are still having issues,

    Open 'Terminal' on your Mac.

Execute the following commands one by one:

    sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper.plist

    sudo chmod 4755 /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper

This will launch the activation screen.

Sign in with your Microsoft account that is associated with your Office Mac 2021 license.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Based on the described behavior and the steps already completed, the remaining options are to ensure the correct perpetual (non‑subscription) build is installed and that macOS is not blocking the Office licensing background service. If that does not resolve the issue, direct support intervention is required; the activation state for an account or device cannot be reset from here.

    Try the following in order:

    1. Verify the correct product and account
    • Confirm that the license is Office Home & Student 2021 (a one‑time purchase) and not an expired Microsoft 365 subscription under the Services & subscriptions page of the Microsoft account.
    • Make sure the same Microsoft account is used to sign into Word on the Mac that shows the Office 2021 license.
    1. Remove any Mac App Store or incorrect Office builds If Office was ever installed from the Mac App Store, remove those apps and reinstall the perpetual build directly from Microsoft:
    2. Close all Office apps.
    3. In Finder > Applications, locate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
    4. Control‑click each and choose Move to Trash, then empty the Trash.
    5. Download a perpetual Office installer directly from Microsoft, for example:
    6. Run the installer and, when prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Office 2021. This ensures the apps are using the perpetual licensing channel instead of Microsoft 365.
    7. Ensure macOS allows the Office licensing background service A common cause of “Unable to connect to licensing helper” and perpetual view‑only mode is macOS blocking the Office licensing helper in the background:
    8. Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
    9. Under Allow in the Background, make sure entries for Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Office Licensing are turned On.
    10. If they were off, enable them, restart the Mac, then open Word and sign in again with the Office 2021 account.
    11. Clean uninstall and reinstall from the account portal If the above does not resolve it, perform a full uninstall and reinstall tied directly to the account that owns the license:
    12. Uninstall all Office apps from Finder > Applications (select all Microsoft Office apps, move to Trash, then empty Trash).
    13. Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard that shows Office 2021.
    14. From the overview or Services & subscriptions, locate the Office 2021 product and choose Install to download the installer.
    15. Run the installer and complete setup, then open Word and sign in with the same account.
    16. If “No license found” or view‑only persists If Word still shows Microsoft 365 subscription prompts or “No license found”/view‑only mode even though the Office 2021 license appears under the account:
    • Confirm again that the correct Microsoft account is used in Word (sign out of all accounts in Word, then sign in only with the account that owns Office 2021).
    • If the license still is not recognized, this indicates an account‑side or entitlement issue that must be corrected by Microsoft support. Use the official support channel to have the license and activation state checked and, if necessary, repaired or re‑issued on the backend.

The activation state for an account or device cannot be reset from this interface; only Microsoft support can adjust or re‑bind the Office 2021 license if the online entitlement is not being honored on the Mac despite the correct build and background permissions.
