My MS office subscription was autorenewed on 31/03/2026 through my credit card. I discovered that the MS office is listed under gaming category , and therefore CC has levied a surcharge and GST on top of it . What is the remedy or issue over here ?

The issue is with how the credit card provider has classified the transaction, not with the Microsoft 365/Office subscription itself.

Microsoft charges the subscription as a normal Microsoft service; the bank or card network then assigns it a category (such as “gaming”) and applies any surcharges or extra GST rules based on that category. Microsoft cannot change how the bank categorizes the charge or how the bank applies its own fees.

    Remedy and next steps:

    1. Verify the charge in the Microsoft account
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the subscription and review the order history and subscription details to confirm it is a standard Microsoft 365/Office subscription and the amount Microsoft actually charged.
      • If needed, use the guidance in How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft to confirm the charge and see if there are any unexpected Microsoft-side issues: go to the Manage your payments page from that article and use Investigate on the relevant transaction.
    2. Confirm there is no duplicate or incorrect Microsoft charge
      • Use the steps in I’ve been charged twice to check for duplicate Microsoft charges in the order history versus the bank statement. This is just to ensure that only one correct subscription charge was made by Microsoft.
    3. Dispute the category/surcharge with the card issuer
      • Since the extra surcharge and GST are imposed by the credit card provider based on their “gaming” classification, the remedy is to contact the bank/credit card support and:
        • Provide proof that the transaction is a Microsoft 365/Office subscription (from the Microsoft order history).
        • Ask them to correct the merchant/category classification and reverse any wrongly applied surcharge or additional GST.
    4. If the Microsoft charge itself looks wrong
      • If the base Microsoft amount or subscription looks incorrect (wrong product, unexpected renewal, etc.), use the How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft article to investigate, and if needed, follow the refund guidance or contact Microsoft Support from those pages.

Microsoft can help confirm and, if applicable, refund the subscription charge itself according to its policies, but only the card issuer can correct or refund bank-imposed surcharges that result from misclassification.
