Hi Dorothy,

If the subscription has been successfully renewed but is still showing the Office not being activated, the best option to proceed is to activate it again by signing out and signing in to your Office application such as Word.

Once done, it should then be able to recognize your newly renewed Office license.

Try these checks and fixes in order:

    1. Confirm the subscription is really active
      • Go to the Microsoft account subscriptions page and verify the Microsoft 365 subscription status is Active.
      • If it shows Expired or Canceled, renew or reactivate it. An expired subscription can prevent editing or saving documents.
    2. Make sure the correct account is signed in in Word
      • In Word, go to File > Account.
      • Check the user account shown under User Information and Product Information.
      • If this is not the account with the active subscription, sign out and sign in with the correct one.
      • Use Update license (if available), then sign in again so Word picks up the renewed subscription.
    3. Check if the document is opening read-only or in Protected View
      • Open the document, go to File > Info.
      • If Protect Document shows Always Open Read-Only or Always Open View-Only, select it to clear that option.
      • Back in the document, use the mode menu in the upper-right corner and switch from Viewing or Reviewing to Editing.
    4. Verify the document is not locked by someone else
      • If the file is on a shared location (SharePoint, OneDrive, network share), another user might have it open in a desktop Office app.
      • In that case, editing is blocked until the other user closes the file.
      • If changes are urgent, use File > Save As to create a new copy and edit that copy.
    5. If editing in Word for the web
      • In Reading view, select Edit Document > Edit to switch to editing mode.
      • If Editing is not available, the owner may have restricted editing; request edit permission or create a copy via File > Create a Copy and edit the copy.

If, after confirming the subscription is active, signing in with the correct account, and clearing read-only/protection settings, editing is still blocked, contact the tenant or system administrator to check for organization-level restrictions on the document.
