Hello, I accidentally purchased a subscription and would like to request a refund and cancellation. I did not intend to subscribe, and I would appreciate your help reversing the charge if possible. I was not planning on this expense and would like it to be taken care of as soon as possible. I appreciate your help and quick response.

Thank you

    Dear @Nathan East,

Good day, and thank you for reaching out to the Q&A Forum. I understand how important it is to resolve subscription concerns quickly. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to investigate and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

To better understand your situation, could you please confirm:

    • Which exact subscription you purchased
    • When the purchase was made

In the meantime, the steps will depend on the type of subscription you have:

For personal subscriptions (Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium)

To check refund eligibility on a subscription you purchased from Microsoft, you will need to cancel it first.

    1. Go to account.microsoft.com/services
    2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the purchase
    3. Select Cancel subscription (or Upgrade or Cancel)
    4. Follow the prompts to complete the cancellation

For details on refund eligibility, please refer to the answer and link provided above by AI, as they may offer helpful guidance.

    For business subcription:

    1. Go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center
    2. Navigate to Billing > Your products
    3. Select the subscription you want to manage
    4. Under Subscription status, select Cancel subscription
    • If you are within the cancellation grace period, you can fully cancel the subscription
    • If you are outside the grace period, you will only be able to turn off recurring billing
    • You can only cancel and receive a prorated credit or refund if you cancel within seven days after the start or renewal of your subscription

For reference: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

I hope this helps clarify your options and provides a clear path forward. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help. Have a wonderful day!

To request a refund and cancel an accidental Microsoft 365/Office-related subscription purchase, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the Services & subscriptions page
    2. Locate the subscription
      • Under “Services & subscriptions,” find the subscription that was accidentally purchased.
      • Select Manage next to that subscription.
      • If you see Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and will not renew; no further action is needed for future charges.
    3. Cancel the subscription
      • On the next page, select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on what is shown).
      • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the cancellation.
    4. Check refund eligibility
      • Not all cancellations result in a refund. Refund eligibility depends on factors such as when the purchase was made and local policies.
      • In some countries, a prorated refund may be available when canceling a Microsoft subscription purchased from Microsoft Store. See the guidance in Countries with prorated refunds for Microsoft subscriptions.
    5. If the subscription was purchased through a third party
      • If the Microsoft 365/Office subscription was purchased from a third-party retailer (for example, Google Play, Apple App Store, Amazon, Best Buy), Microsoft cannot cancel or refund it directly.
      • Contact the retailer’s customer support and request cancellation/refund according to their policies.
    6. If the charge is unrecognized or you need further help
      • If the charge is not recognized or there are issues with the refund, use the Microsoft subscription refund guidance to investigate and request help from Microsoft Support as needed.
