I'm attempting to open excel and a notice pops up saying that excel needs to be repaired. I press repair now and nothing happens. What do I need to do?

    Hi @Linnea,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I would like to provide you with the following information:

You can perform an Online Repair (this is a powerful tool to fix Office applications).

Step 1: Close all Office applications.

    Step 2: Press Windows + I.

Step 3: Select Apps > Installed apps.

Step 4: Find the Office suite.

Step 5: Click on the … > Modify > Online Repair option.

You may refer to the following document:

Repair an Office application - Microsoft Support

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.

Use a full Online Repair of Office instead of the in-app “Repair now” prompt, which usually only runs a Quick Repair and often does not fix this issue.

    Follow these steps (Windows 10/11):

    1. Close all Office apps (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
    2. Right-click the Start button.
    3. On Windows 11 select Installed apps; on Windows 10 select Apps and Features.
    4. Find Microsoft 365 or Office in the list.
    5. Select it, then choose Modify (or click the three dots (…) → Modify).
    6. When asked how to repair Office, choose Online Repair (not Quick Repair), then select Repair.
    7. Let the repair complete (this can take some time) and then restart the computer.
    8. Open Excel again and check that it starts normally.

If Excel still will not open correctly after an Online Repair, perform a full uninstall of Office and reinstall it, as described in the Q&A context, or contact Microsoft Support using the Get Help app.
