Audio issues

I updated Windows yesterday, and both the speakers and the microphone disappeared on my HP Envy 14 laptop. Despite downloading and updating the drivers, I cannot get it functioning

The automatic check didn't resolve it.

    Hi,

If you still have the same issue despite following the steps recommended, please try the following methods. If the first method does not work, please proceed to the next method.

    1.) Shut down your computer

Press the SHIFT key + Shutdown or press the power button for 10 seconds until the PC turns off. Unplug the extra peripherals and power adapter from the PC for 30 seconds, then plug the power adapter in and turn on.

    2.) Run Audio Troubleshooter.

    • Select Start > Settings > System.
    • Scroll down and select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooter
    • Go to the Audio section and click the Run button to start the audio troubleshooter.

    3.) Restart Windows Audio Services.

    • Press Windows key+R to open Run, then type: services.msc. This will open the service app
    • Find the following Support services in the list: Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
    • For each service, Right-click, then select Restart > Right-click it again, then select Properties > Click the General Tab, in the Startup Type option, choose Automatic in the drop-down list.
    • After all services are done, click Apply and OK.
    • Restart your computer.

4.) Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

If you require further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

    Stay Safe!

Follow these steps in order on the HP Envy 14 running Windows 11:

    1. Check Windows Update (including optional updates)
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      2. Select Check for updates and install everything offered, including any optional or driver updates.
      3. Restart the PC and see if the audio devices reappear.
    2. Update the audio driver in Device Manager
      1. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right‑click the audio device (for example, Realtek, High Definition Audio, or similar) and select Update driver.
      4. Select Search automatically for drivers and complete the wizard.
      5. Restart the PC.
    3. Reinstall the audio driver (refresh a broken install) If updating did not help or devices are missing:
      1. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right‑click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
      3. If available, check Delete the driver software for this device, then select Uninstall.
      4. Restart the PC. Windows will attempt to reinstall the audio driver automatically.
      5. If nothing reinstalls, in Device Manager right‑click the computer name at the top and select Scan for hardware changes.
    4. Install the latest HP audio driver manually
      1. Go to HP’s support website.
      2. Search for HP Envy 14 and select the exact model.
      3. Download the latest Windows 11 audio driver for that model.
      4. Run the installer and follow HP’s instructions.
      5. Restart the PC.
    5. If the issue started immediately after the update If audio worked before the Windows update and stopped right after, and the above steps do not help, use one of these options:
      • In Device Manager, open the audio device Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the button is available, then follow the prompts.
      • If rolling back is not available or does not help, restore the PC from a system restore point created before the update, using the steps in Recovery options in Windows (see linked article in the references).

If after these steps Device Manager still shows no working audio device at all, repeat step 3 (uninstall) and then rely on Windows Update plus the HP support driver in step 4.
