Every time I try to use word it pops up there is a problem and ask to fix or restart or get help. I have tried all three. Sometimes it will let me start typing then it will exit out and I lose everything I have typed. I have updated my computer and my Microsoft account.

Try the following: Restart your PC and then run an Online Repair. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b .

Since an Online Repair usually requires a reinstall of Office, before you begin, check that you can access your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that Office is associated with it.

    Hi,

Let me verify if the problem is with an addin.

Press Windows+R keys on the keyboard, or Right-click Start on the Taskbar and choose Run.

    Type winword.exe /safe

    Press Enter.

Let me know if it opens properly.

I’m eager to hear back and work together to find a solution.

The behavior described matches a common Word startup/working error that the built‑in “Repair now” prompt often does not fix. Use the following steps in order:

    1. Install all Office and Windows updates
    • Make sure Windows and Office are fully up to date, as many Word issues are fixed by updates.
    • Follow the guidance in “Verify or install the latest updates” to install important, recommended, and optional updates, then restart the computer and try Word again. See Update Office and your computer with Microsoft Update.
    1. Run an Online Repair of Office (strongly recommended) The in‑app “repair” prompt is usually only a quick repair. A full Online Repair is more thorough and often resolves this error.
    • Close all Office apps.
    • Open Windows Settings → Apps (or Apps > Installed apps).
    • Find the Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365 entry.
    • Choose Modify → select Online Repair → Repair.
    • Let the process complete, then restart the computer and test Word.

Multiple Microsoft Q&A answers confirm that an Online Repair is the preferred fix when the “Repair now” dialog does not help.

    1. If Word still crashes, try the Word‑specific troubleshooting steps If the problem persists after Online Repair and updates, use the Word troubleshooting sequence:

    a. Start Word with the /a switch

    • Use the “Start Word by using the /a switch” option to start Word in a minimal, no‑add‑ins mode (winword /a). If Word works correctly in this mode, the issue is likely with templates, add‑ins, or settings.

    b. Reset Word’s registry settings

    • Follow the “Delete the Word Data registry subkey” steps to export and then delete the Data key for the version of Word in use, then start Word.
    • If needed, also follow “Delete the Word Options registry key” to export and then delete the Options key for the Word version, then start Word again.

    c. Replace the Normal.dotm template

    • Follow “Replace the Normal.dot or Normal.dotm global template file” to rename Normal.dotm so Word creates a fresh template, then test again.

    d. Disable add‑ins (including COM add‑ins and Startup folder add‑ins)

    • Use the “Disable the Startup folder add-ins” and “Delete the COM add-ins registry keys” options to temporarily remove add‑ins and see if stability improves. If Word stops crashing, re‑enable add‑ins one by one to find the problematic one.
    1. If none of the above works
    • Perform a complete uninstall of Office, restart the PC, and then reinstall Office from the Microsoft account services page, as described in the Q&A guidance. This is the last resort when Online Repair and Word‑specific fixes do not resolve the issue.

To avoid losing work while troubleshooting, save frequently and consider using AutoSave/AutoRecover in Word once it is stable again.
