Hi all,

Looking for advice on transferring my Windows Pro account over to a new device. I recently purchased a new laptop via work and set it up with Windows Pro. Unfortunately it had hardware issues so was wiped and returned. I received a new replacement but now lost my Windows Pro. How can I get support from Windows transferring this over?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Jez Williams,

Regarding transferring your Windows Pro license to your replacement laptop, the activation method depends entirely on how the original Pro edition was acquired. If your company purchased the laptop with Windows Pro preinstalled by the OEM, that license is embedded in the hardware firmware of the returned device and cannot be transferred to the new one. In this specific scenario, you should reach out to your corporate IT administrator or the equipment supplier to verify the licensing entitlement bundled with your new replacement unit.

If you manually upgraded the original laptop using a retail digital license or a Microsoft 365 Business subscription tied to your work account, you can easily reactivate it on the new machine. First, ensure you sign in with the exact same Microsoft or corporate account on the replacement device, then navigate to Settings, select System, and click Activation. If the system does not activate automatically, you can run the built-in Activation Troubleshooter from that same menu and select the option indicating you recently changed hardware on this device to pull the digital entitlement from your account history.

If these steps help restore your Windows Pro status, please accept this answer to help other community members facing similar issues.

    Tracy.

Support and transfer options depend on how Windows Pro was obtained on the returned laptop.

    1. If Windows Pro was an upgrade purchased from Microsoft Store on top of Windows Home:
      • The upgrade is a digital license linked to the Microsoft account used for purchase.
      • On the replacement laptop (running Windows Home), sign in with the same Microsoft account.
      • Ensure the device is online, then upgrade to Pro:
        • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation (or Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11).
        • Use the Microsoft Store upgrade path if offered, or, if the Pro edition is not yet installed, you can trigger the edition change using the generic Pro key method described in the Q&A:
          • Disconnect from the internet.
          • Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key.
          • Enter the generic Pro key VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T.
          • Let Windows upgrade the edition to Pro, then restart the device.
          • Reconnect to the internet; the digital Pro license linked to the Microsoft account should activate automatically on the new device.
    2. If Windows Pro came preinstalled from the OEM (work laptop shipped with Pro):
      • The Windows license is normally tied to the device’s hardware (firmware-embedded key).
      • When that device is wiped and returned, the Pro license generally stays with that original hardware and does not transfer.
      • In that case, contact the OEM or the work IT/admin who supplied the laptop to confirm what edition is licensed on the replacement device and whether a Pro entitlement is included.
    3. If Windows Pro is part of a business subscription (for example, Windows 10/11 Enterprise or Pro via Microsoft 365/Windows 365 Business):
      • Subscription activation upgrades an underlying Pro device when a licensed user signs in and the device meets requirements.
      • Ensure the replacement device has a valid underlying Windows Pro license and is joined to the appropriate environment (for example, Microsoft Entra ID) with the same user account that has the Windows subscription license assigned.
      • Keep the device online so subscription activation can acquire/renew the license. If the subscription is removed or the device is offline too long, it will revert to Pro or Pro Education.
    4. If activation fails on the replacement device:
      • Use Settings > Activation > Troubleshoot to run the activation troubleshooter.
      • If the troubleshooter cannot resolve it and the license is a retail/digital purchase, contact Microsoft Support (phone or support channel available in the region). In similar cases, support has reactivated or reassigned retail digital licenses after hardware changes.

For direct support, use the Microsoft account that shows the Pro upgrade or subscription purchase and provide order details or subscription information when contacting support.
