I just purchased a Windows 11 Pro upgrade from the Microsoft Store on May 31, 2026 for $99. I have a receipt confirmation email but when it tried to install I got error code 0xc004f050 and it failed. The purchase is not showing up in my Microsoft Store Library either. I need help activating the upgrade I already paid for.

Try this process with the generic Windows Pro key to perform the upgrade from Home to Pro.

Important - disconnect totally from the Internet

Open the Settings App (Gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Update and Security - Activation

    Click Change Product key

Enter this generic product key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

    When prompted, click 'Activate Product'

If the above does not work first time, restart your PC and try again.

Note the generic key will cause the Home edition to upgrade to the Pro edition, then your own legal licence will activate automatically after you restart (not shut down) your PC

Error code 0xC004F050 indicates that the product key used for activation is not valid for the edition/version of Windows installed.

Since the upgrade to Windows 11 Pro was purchased from the Microsoft Store, that purchase should create a digital license linked to the Microsoft account used for the purchase rather than requiring a separate product key.

    Perform these steps:

    1. Verify Windows edition and sign-in
      • On the device, go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      • Confirm the current edition (for example, Windows 11 Home) and ensure the device is signed in with the same Microsoft account that received the Microsoft Store purchase confirmation email.
    2. Retry activation from Activation settings
      • In Settings > System > Activation, if there is an option such as Troubleshoot, run the Activation troubleshooter.
      • If prompted, select Go to Microsoft Store from the activation page and follow the prompts so the Store can detect and apply the digital license.
    3. Check for common causes of 0xC004F050
      • This error appears when the key does not match the installed edition (for example, an Enterprise or other edition key on Home/Pro). Ensure only the Microsoft Store Pro upgrade is being applied and no other keys are entered.
      • If a different or generic key was entered previously, remove it by returning to Settings > System > Activation, choosing Change product key, and then allowing the Store-based upgrade path to handle activation instead of manually entering another key.
    4. Confirm license type and source
      • For Microsoft Store purchases, the upgrade is a digital license. The confirmation email’s Microsoft account is the one that holds the license. Ensure that same account is used on the device.
    5. If activation still fails
      • Error 0xC004F050 is listed among errors that can indicate a key that cannot be used to activate Windows or that activation servers were busy. In that case, wait and try activation again from Settings > System > Activation.
      • If repeated attempts fail and the Store purchase still does not appear in the Microsoft Store Library, contact customer support using the official activation support channel referenced in the documentation so the purchase and license can be checked and corrected.

These steps align with guidance that 0xC004F050 and related codes can mean the product key cannot be used to activate Windows and that a different key or a properly linked digital license is required.
