Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Was the $179 charge from Microsoft directly, or was the subscription purchased through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer?

If the subscription was purchased directly from Microsoft, sign in to your Microsoft account and check the subscription status. Depending on your subscription type, cancellation date, and country/region, you may be eligible for a refund.

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    • Sign in with the Microsoft account you used for the subscription.
    • Look for your Microsoft 365 subscription and select "Manage".
    • Then choose "Cancel subscription" and follow the prompts.
    • Once it's canceled, you may see an option to request a refund, if you're eligible, it’ll appear there automatically.

To request a refund for the $179 charge, follow these steps based on how and where the Microsoft 365 subscription was purchased and cancelled:

    1. Confirm where the subscription was purchased
      • If it was purchased directly from Microsoft, manage it at the Services page: https://account.microsoft.com/services (sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the subscription).
      • If it was purchased through a third party (for example, Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon, Best Buy, or another retailer), Microsoft cannot process the refund. In that case, contact the retailer’s support directly. For example:
    2. Check that the subscription is actually cancelled
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in.
      • Find the Microsoft 365 subscription:
        • If it shows Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, it is already set to expire and will not be charged again.
        • If it shows Manage, select it, then select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel) and follow the prompts to complete cancellation.
    3. Check refund eligibility and request the refund
      • For Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium subscriptions purchased from Microsoft, refund eligibility is determined after cancellation.
      • After cancelling, the system will indicate whether a refund is available for the most recent charge and will guide through the steps if eligible. Not all cancellations result in a refund.
      • In certain countries, cancelling may entitle to a prorated refund if the subscription was purchased from the Microsoft Store. Countries with prorated refunds include:
        • Any subscription length: Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey
        • Subscriptions longer than 1 month and renewed: Denmark, Finland, Germany (purchases on or after March 1, 2022), Netherlands, Poland, Portugal
      • For details, see Countries with prorated refunds for Microsoft subscriptions.
    4. If the charge is unrecognized or appears after cancellation
      • Use the guidance in How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft (from the Q&A references) to confirm which account or product the $179 charge belongs to.
      • If it is a duplicate or unwanted renewal and the online flow does not offer a refund, contact Microsoft Support for billing help:
        • Go to the Microsoft Support site, choose Microsoft 365, then follow the prompts (for example, “Billing issue” → Get HelpSign in to Contact Support → Microsoft 365 and Office → a billing category → Chat with a support agent in your web browser).
    5. If the subscription was purchased through a third party
      • Microsoft cannot cancel or refund subscriptions purchased via third-party retailers. All refund requests must go to the retailer because Microsoft did not receive the payment.
      • Contact the retailer’s customer support and provide the billing proof for the $179 charge.

If the $179 charge is confirmed as a valid Microsoft 365 renewal on a Microsoft account and the self-service refund option is not presented after cancellation, the next step is to contact Microsoft Support directly with the transaction details so they can review refund eligibility.
