Windows 11 Pro license activated on wrong Microsoft account

Hello Microsoft Support,

I recently upgraded my old laptop from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro for business use.

The activation key worked successfully, but after activating Windows, I realized that the license was linked to an old Microsoft account that I no longer remember or cannot access.

I tried to recover the old email account, but I do not remember the login information, and Microsoft has blocked the account recovery attempts.

I would like to link the Windows 11 Pro license to my current Microsoft account, which I actively use now.

Could you please advise:

  1. Is it possible to transfer the Windows 11 Pro license to another Microsoft account?
  2. What information or proof of purchase do I need to provide?
  3. What steps should I follow to fix this situation?

Thank you for your help.

When a Windows licence is activated, that becomes automatically associated to the Microsoft account used at the time, and there is no native process provided to move a Windows licence to another Microsoft account.

This forum is just a user to user forum, no-one here has any account access, the only hope you may have is to contact Microsoft Support directly, provide them with proof of purchase, and ask them if it is possible to move the licence for you, however, if you do not have access to the account you registered the licence to, then that will most likely not be possible.

    1. A Windows 11 Pro digital license is linked to both the device hardware and the Microsoft account used when it was purchased or activated. The context provided describes how to link a Microsoft account to an existing digital license on the same device, but does not describe any supported process to move or reassign that existing digital license from one Microsoft account to a different Microsoft account. The supported scenario is:
      • Ensure the device is activated with Windows 11 Pro.
      • Link the current signed-in Microsoft account to the existing digital license on that device via Settings.
However, if the license is already associated with another Microsoft account that cannot be accessed, the context does not document a way to transfer that association to a different Microsoft account. The digital license will continue to activate Windows on that same device, but changing the owning Microsoft account is not covered.
    2. For activation and reactivation, the documentation focuses on:
      • Verifying activation status and edition (Home vs Pro) under Settings > System > Activation.
      • Knowing how the license was obtained (upgrade, Microsoft Store purchase, OEM, retail key, etc.), as this determines whether activation uses a digital license or a product key.
      • Having the original product key if activation by key is required (for example, after hardware changes or when using Change product key).
      Specifically, the guidance mentions:
      • If Windows 11 Pro was purchased from the Microsoft Store, the Microsoft account used for that purchase holds the digital license, and the purchase appears in that account’s order history.
      • If a product key was used (retail key, OEM key, or key from an authorized retailer), that key is the proof needed to reactivate on the same device (for example, after hardware changes) via Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
The context does not describe any process where proof of purchase is used to move a digital license from one Microsoft account to another; it is only used to activate or reactivate Windows on a device.
    3. Steps that are supported in the documentation and can be followed on the current device:
      1. Confirm Windows 11 Pro is activated and which activation method is in use:
        • Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
        • Check the activation status message and edition (must show Windows 11 Pro).
        • If it shows Windows is activated with a digital license or Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, note this status.
      2. Link the current Microsoft account to the device’s activation (if the UI allows it):
        • Sign in to Windows with the Microsoft account that should be used going forward.
        • Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info and confirm that the signed-in account is an Administrator and that an email address is shown (indicating a Microsoft account).
        • Return to Settings > System > Activation.
        • If the page shows Windows is activated with a digital license (not yet linked), select Add an account, sign in with the current Microsoft account, and complete sign-in.
        • After this, the message should change to Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
This step is only possible if the activation page currently allows adding an account. If the license is already linked to a different Microsoft account and the UI does not offer Add an account, the context does not provide a supported way to change that association.
      3. If a product key was originally used and is still available:
        • Use Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter that key to re-establish activation on the device under the current signed-in account.
        • The documentation notes that when a valid product key is entered, a digital license is granted to the device for Windows 11 based on that key.
      4. If activation problems occur (for example, after hardware changes):
        • Use Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
        • If eligible, choose I changed hardware on this device recently and sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the digital license to reactivate.
The provided documentation does not describe a path to:
      • Recover or move a digital license from an inaccessible Microsoft account to a different Microsoft account, or
      • Reassign ownership of a Microsoft Store–based digital license between accounts.
