I have been using Word for 3 months under my Microsoft 365 business account, and two days ago, all of a sudden, it says my account is unverified, and I can't edit documents. When I go to Accounts and click Update, it says, " Oops, something went wrong. I want to speak to a live human with a heartbeat.

    Hi Donna Reese

Since you've already confirmed that the license assignment has been checked by your administrator and you've gone through the activation troubleshooting steps, there may not be much more that can be done from the end-user side.

At this stage, I'd recommend asking your administrator to reopen or escalate the support request with Microsoft through the Microsoft 365 admin center and let them know that:

    • Word suddenly reports the account as unverified.
    • The Update option returns "Oops, something went wrong"
    • The license assignment has already been verified.
    • The issue is preventing document editing on your work device.

For further instructions, your administrator can refer to this guide: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/get-help-support?view=o365-worldwide

Since business support requests must generally be handled through the tenant administrator, they can request a callback and work directly with Microsoft Support to investigate the activation issue further.

Just a quick note that this forum is a peer-to-peer community, so while members can share advice and experiences only, members do not have access to internal databases or the ability to escalate cases directly to Microsoft’s internal teams. Therefore, please kindly contact the Microsoft Support team for the most efficient help.

    I hope this information helps.

Have your Microsoft 365 administrator verify that your account still has an active license containing the desktop Office apps, then have the administrator open a support request for a live callback.

    1. Verify the business license

Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator—the business owner, internal help desk, or person who created the subscription—to check that:

    • Your user account still exists and is enabled.
    • A license remains assigned to it.
    • The assigned plan includes desktop editing, such as Microsoft 365 Apps for business, Business Standard, or Business Premium. Business Basic does not include desktop Office editing.^1^

If you do not know the administrator, contact the person who originally supplied your business account. Microsoft explains how to identify the appropriate administrator here.^2^

After the administrator corrects or reassigns the license, close all Office applications, reopen Word, and sign in using that same work account.

    2. Request a live Microsoft support callback

    The tenant administrator should:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    2. Open Help & support.
    3. Enter:
Microsoft 365 Apps activation failure — account shown as unverified and Word is read-only
    4. Review the suggested results, then select the support/contact option.
    5. Enter contact details and choose Contact me when that option is offered.

Microsoft’s public support page also provides business support routes and regional telephone numbers; availability depends on the product and support plan.^3^

If your organization purchased Business Assist, its licensed users can contact an advisor through Microsoft Support, while an owner or administrator can request contact through the admin center.^4^

    3. If the license is correctly assigned

Since the in-app Update action already fails, do not keep repeating it.

    • Windows 10 or 11: Run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter on the affected computer. Microsoft’s activation page provides the troubleshooter and also recommends checking for conflicting Office installations and confirming the account and subscription status.^5^
    • Mac: In Word, select Word > About Microsoft Word > More Info > Refresh License, then sign in with the licensed business account. If that does not restore editing, provide the macOS version, Word version, and exact activation error to the administrator’s support case.^6^

Do not uninstall Office until the administrator confirms that the correct desktop-app license is assigned; reinstalling cannot correct a missing or incompatible license.
