Creating the Project and Workflow Process for Exchange Server

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

When you create a new workflow project, a new solution is created, and the project is added to this solution. Workflow Designer for Exchange Server also generates automatically a new empty workflow process, containing only starting and ending shapes.

Each solution can contain multiple projects of various types, including one or more workflow projects for Exchange Server or Microsoft® SQL Server™ and Dashboard projects.

Each Exchange Workflow project is based on a single public folder and might contain one or more workflow processes.

The solution file (*.sln) is stored by default.

**Note   **To add workflow to a folder, you must have Owner permissions on the folder and be a member of the Can Author Workflow role on the Exchange Server or SharePoint Portal Server where the folder is located.

To create a project and workflow process

  1. Open Microsoft Office XP Developer, Microsoft Development Environment.

  2. From the File menu, select New, and then select Project.

  3. The New Project dialog box is displayed; select Office Developer Projects. Under Templates: three project icons are displayed, Exchange Workflow, SQL Workflow and Dashboard project.

  4. Select the Exchange Workflow Project icon.

  5. In the New Project dialog box, enter a name for the new project and a folder location in the form of a URL, for example http://myserver/public/myfolder. The folder location will default to the last folder opened.

**Note   **You cannot browse to an http location unless you have created a network place.

  6. Click OK.

**Caution   **Each Exchange folder location can contain only one Exchange Workflow Project. Each project can contain multiple workflow processes.

An empty workflow process is created, and the workflow diagram is displayed on the Design Surface.
