Copying a Workflow Process for Exchange Server

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

When you have created a workflow process, you might want to copy it to the current folder and then modify it or copy it to another folder.

Workflow processes can be saved as a Workflow Process Definition (*.wfd), or as File System Format (*.wef). The first option, which is the default, is the native format that is saved to the Microsoft® Exchange 2000 Server folder or SharePoint Portal Server folder. The second option will save the workflow process, properties, and common script out in File System Format (meaning binary format). This will make it possible for copies of workflow to be distributed easily to users who do not have access to the same Exchange server.

**Note   **To save a workflow process, it must be opened on the design surface.

To copy a workflow process

  1. Open the Development Environment. Open an existing solution, or use File, New to create a workflow project. The solution, along with any of its projects and existing workflow processes, is displayed in the Solution Explorer.

  2. Double-click a workflow process in the Solution Explorer to display the workflow design on the Design Surface.

  3. From the File menu, select Save Copy of <name>.wfd As….

  4. A dialog displaying the current Exchange folder is shown; select the destination folder for the copy, enter a name for the copy, and then click OK.

**Note   **You must have Owner permissions and be a member of the Can Register Workflow role to save the copy to the Exchange folder.
