data collation

In software metering, the process of moving software usage data from a software metering server to a site server and from a child site server to a parent site server.
See also software metering database.

destination address

The address of the computer to which data is sent.
See also address.

details pane

The pane that displays the results of selecting an item in the SMS Administrator console. The results that are displayed depend on the item that is selected.
See also console tree; Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

discovery agent

A program that finds resources for SMS. Discovery agents create discovery data records (DDRs) that SMS uses to keep track of the resource.

discovery data

Information that identifies a resource. For example, discovery data for an SMS client can include the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the network connection, the operating system type and version, and a unique SMSUID assigned to the client. The discovery data is provided by the SMS site's discovery methods and is stored in the SMS site database. Collections are populated based on discovery data. You can use discovery data as the criteria that define a collection of SMS clients that receive a software package, such as Microsoft Excel.

Discovery Data Manager

(DDM) An SMS thread component that processes discovery data records and loads the data into the SMS site database; forwards all assigned data to secondary sites and propagates all data to each site's parent site; processes the information gathered through the discovery methods enabled for the site; and processes site boundary changes.
See also discovery data record.

discovery data record

(DDR) The file format and the actual file in which discovery data is reported to an SMS site database. When SMS discovers a resource, a discovery data record is created that provides information about the resource. The record is written to a formatted, binary file that is processed by the Discovery Data Manager (DDM).
See also discovery data; discovery methods, Discovery Data Manager.

discovery methods

Procedures used to detect and acquire information about resources on a network. When a discovery method runs, it sends a discovery data record (DDR) containing information about the resource to the discovery database in the SMS site database. SMS uses the following discovery methods:

Windows Networking Logon Discovery

Returns discovery data from resources whose users log on to a Windows NT/Windows 2000 network.

Windows NT User Group Discovery

Finds Windows NT/Windows 2000 user groups.

Windows NT User Account Discovery

Finds Windows NT/Windows 2000 user accounts.

NetWare Discovery

Returns discovery data from resources authenticating to NetWare Bindery servers.

Network Discovery

Returns discovery data about system resources, such as network topology, potential clients, and the operating systems in use.

Heartbeat Discovery

Periodically updates the SMS site database with fresh discovery data generated on SMS clients.

display filter

In Network Monitor, the feature that hides or displays categories of information in the Frame Viewer window.

distribution point

A site system with the distribution point role that stores package files received from a site server. Clients contact distribution points to obtain programs and files after they detect that an advertisement is available from a client access point (CAP).
