Migration Overview - Stream (Classic) to Stream (on SharePoint)

We're merging the powerful capabilities of Stream and SharePoint to bring native video experiences integrated across Microsoft 365. For more information, see the Stream (on SharePoint) overview.
To help in this transition, we have built a migration tool to allow IT admins to move videos from Stream (Classic) directly into SharePoint and OneDrive to take advantage of Stream (on SharePoint).
Migration summary
The following key points summarize how migration and retirement work:
- See timeline details, for which parts of Stream (Classic) will change as it retires.
- This migration tool can be run by SharePoint Global Admins, and can't be used by regular users to migrate their own videos.
- Stream (Classic) and Stream (built on SharePoint) will coexist for an extended period depending on your internal migration plans. You're able to acclimate your users to the new experience before migrating all your content.
- Between now and the Stream (Classic) retirement date you have flexibility to migrate your content on your own schedule. You can pick your own migration destinations or use the defaults provided by the tool.
- Microsoft won't automatically force a migration of your content to Stream (on SharePoint). If you choose not to migrate your content, it is deleted when Stream (Classic) is retired.
- Not all content in your tenant needs to move to Stream (on SharePoint). Before you migrate, you might want to audit your video files, and remove or leave behind any stale content. Use the Stream (Classic) inventory & usage report to understand what content in Stream (classic), who owns it, and when it was last viewed.
- Only admins can use the tool to migrate content. You need to be a SharePoint or global admin to use the migration tool and be a Stream (Classic) or global admin to access the Stream (Classic) migration settings.
- There isn't going to be an 'end-user led' migration option. Users can manually download their videos and reupload them to SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and Yammer.
- Only certain pieces of critical metadata and permissions are migrated with the videos (title, description, transcripts, etc.) The remaining metadata won't be migrated.
- Stream (Classic) URLs and embed links keep working post migration. Links to Stream (Classic) will redirect to the videos in their new destination after the migration.

- Stream (on SharePoint) moved to general availability
- Migration tool + classic report available to all customers (except GCC) under public preview
- Stream mobile app changed to include videos from Stream (Classic) and videos from OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, & Yammer, offline and uploads via mobile app removed
- New Microsoft 365 tenants are no longer able to use Stream (Classic)
November 2022 - Stream (Classic) upload page changed to include a message to upload to Stream (on SharePoint) in addition to upload to Classic for all customers who didn't previously opt out via support ticket
January 17, 2023 - Stream (Classic) upload page changes to show the option to upload to Stream (on SharePoint) for all customers. Most customers already have this change, this applies the change to customers that opted out via support ticket.
February 15, 2023 - Start of the countdowns until no new videos can be uploaded and retirement of Stream classic

May 15, 2023 - No new videos can be uploaded to Stream (Classic) unless admin takes action to delay this change.

August 15, 2023 - No new Stream (Classic) web part can be created. Check web part transition timeline for details
September 15, 2023 - No new videos can be uploaded to Stream (Classic) for any customers md#transition-plan).
September 20, 2023 - New Stream webpart GA. Users can configure a video or group of videos from a folder on a SharePoint page using the new web part. Check [web part transition timeline for details](webpart-transition.
October 15, 2023 - Users no longer able to access or use Stream (Classic) unless admin takes action to delay this change. This change can be delayed until April 15, 2024.
January 31, 2024 - No new Stream live events can be created, any Stream live event scheduled after January 31, 2024 will be automatically removed. See Stream live events retirement FAQ for more info.
April 15, 2024 - Stream (Classic) is fully retired & automatically disabled
- Users & admins no longer able to access or use Stream (Classic)
- Any remaining content in Stream (Classic) that wasn't migrated will be deleted. Update: Content deletion plans are mentioned here

November 15, 2024 - Stream (Classic) infrastructure deprecation starts. Details here
February 15, 2025 - Stream (Classic) links and embed codes will no longer redirect to the migrated videos in OneDrive & SharePoint
GCC
Past
July 30, 2023 - Stream (Classic) migration tool is generally available
- Start of 6 months countdown until no new videos can be uploaded and one year to Classic retirement
- New settings added to schedule/delay blocking of uploads & tenant disablement
Post tool GA for GCC, feature enhancements and bug fixes to GCC will be available simultaneously with non-GCC customers.
October 30, 2023 - No new videos can be uploaded to Stream (Classic) unless admins takes action to delay this change. This can be delayed until January 30, 2024.
January 30, 2024 - No new videos can be uploaded to Stream (Classic) for any customers.
March 30, 2024 - Users no longer able to access or use Stream (Classic) unless admin takes action to delay this change. This change can be delayed until July 30, 2024.
April 15, 2024 - No new Stream live events can be created, any Stream live event scheduled after April 15, 2024 will be automatically removed. See Stream live events retirement FAQ for more info.

Adoption strategies for moving to Stream (on SharePoint)
Before you decide to migrate videos, you should familiarize yourself with Stream (on SharePoint) and how your users will use it. This familiarity is important as there are a differences between the two solutions. When you transition, it's important that your users are aware of these differences. Thus, it's critical that you, your stakeholders, and power users have a good understanding of Stream (on SharePoint). It's recommended that your users start using Stream (on SharePoint) before you begin migration.

Understand the migration process & the tool
Running the migration tool is one part of migration process. There's many other things to do before you actually start moving videos, such as planning the migration and taking decisions on which content to move and where to move.

Migration strategies
There are several different approaches you can take to moving your users and content off of Stream (Classic) and on to Stream (on SharePoint). The approach or combination of approaches that work best for you and your organization will depend on your organization size, number of videos in Stream (Classic), your current use of Stream (Classic), and organization culture.
