Cluster Administrator and DTC Configurations

Applies To: Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server Technical Preview, Windows Vista

In Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and subsequent versions the Cluster Administrator tool makes the following changes to the DTC configuration:

  • It creates a DTC resource in a resource group containing a shared disk resource and a network name resource.

  • It creates a DTC log file on the shared disk in the DTC resource group so that the transaction manager can access the DTC log file from any system in the cluster.

  • It copies critical DTC registry entries to the shared cluster registry.

  • It causes the DTC to execute under the NetworkService account by default, regardless of the account that the DTC executed under prior to being added to the cluster. These account changes are propagated to a cluster node only when DTC is brought online on that node.

When the DTC is running in clustered mode, only one node in the cluster can run the DTC transaction manager.

Any process running on any node in the cluster may use the DTC. These processes simply call the DTC proxy in the normal way, and the DTC proxy automatically forwards DTC calls to the DTC transaction manager that is controlling the entire cluster.

Certain prerequisite conditions must be met before you configure the DTC to run in a clustered environment. For more information, see Prerequisite Considerations for Adding a DTC Resource to a Cluster.
