Managing DTC Resources in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

Applies To: Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server Technical Preview, Windows Vista

You can use the Cluster Administrator tool to add a DTC resource to a cluster, move the resource from one group to another, or remove a DTC resource from a cluster, as follows:

  • Adding a resource When you use the Cluster Administrator tool to add a DTC resource, you must supply specified values. For more information, see Prerequisite Considerations Before Adding a DTC Resource to a Cluster.

  • Moving a resource You can use the Cluster Administrator tool to move a DTC resource from one group to another. When you move a DTC resource to another group, all resource dependencies are automatically moved with it.

  • Removing a resource If the DTC is configured as a cluster resource but you would prefer to run the DTC on cluster nodes strictly as a local service, you can remove the DTC resource from the cluster. If any of the DTC dependencies of the removed DTC resource are also dependencies for other cluster resources, the cluster service displays a notification message to the administrator.

    Note

When a DTC resource is deleted from a cluster, the DTC can no longer be started as a local service on a cluster node. Therefore, when planning to run the DTC as a local service, always remove the DTC resource rather than actually deleting it from the cluster.
