    Hello,

If Word was working before and suddenly stopped working, the quickest way to fix this is to repair Office.

    Please try the following steps:

    1. Open Settings in Windows.
    2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
    3. Find Microsoft Office (or Microsoft 365) and select Modify.
    4. Choose Quick Repair first. If the issue continues, try Online Repair.

    Repair an Office application

These repair options will fix Word without removing your documents.

If Word still does not start after the repair, please let me know what happens when you try to open it (error message, freeze, or no response).

Follow these steps in order until Word works again.

    1. Try starting Word in Safe Mode
      1. Select the Search icon on the taskbar and type run, then select the Run app.
      2. In Run, type:
              winword /safe

        and press Enter.
      3. If Word opens and shows “(Safe Mode)” in the title bar, the problem is likely add-ins.
    2. Disable add-ins (if Word opens in Safe Mode)
      1. With Word still in Safe Mode, select File > Options > Add‑Ins.
      2. In the Manage box at the bottom, choose COM Add‑ins (or Word Add‑ins if shown), then select Go.
      3. Clear the check box for one add‑in and select OK.
      4. Close Word, then start Word normally (without /safe).
        • If Word starts, the last add‑in you unchecked is causing the problem. Leave it disabled or remove it, or check the vendor’s site for an updated version.
        • If Word still does not start, repeat steps 1–4, disabling add‑ins one by one. Also repeat for any other Add‑ins type in the Manage list.
      5. If all add‑ins are unchecked and Word still will not start, the issue is not add‑ins. Continue with repair.
    3. Run an Online Repair of Office
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some versions).
      3. Find Microsoft Office (or Microsoft 365 Apps), select it, then choose Modify.
      4. Select Online Repair, then Repair.
      5. Let the repair complete and then try opening Word again.
    4. If Online Repair does not fix it
      1. Uninstall Office from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      2. Restart the PC (use Restart, not Shut down).
      3. Sign in to the Microsoft account where the Office subscription or license is registered.
      4. Download and reinstall Office from that account, then test Word again.
    5. Update Windows and device drivers (if Word still fails)
      1. On Windows 11 or 10, go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates, then install all available updates.
      2. If the issue continues, update key drivers (video card, printer, mouse, keyboard) from each manufacturer’s website.

These steps cover the main causes when Word previously worked and suddenly stops working, including damaged Office files, problematic add‑ins, and incompatible drivers.
