I was guided to enter a generic key to upgrade from Windows Home to Pro, but when I did, now it says my windows activation state is "inactive". What can I do?

Do you have a Pro license? Generic key is not meant for activation purposes. It is just a tool to get the Pro installed, but you still need to use our own license after that to activate.

As far as how you activate, depends on the type of license.

Is this a reinstall? Or first time using the license?

Did you purchase the license from Microsoft, or from third party?

Was home edition activated prior to this?

Did you purchase the full Pro license, or just the upgrade license?

    Hi Jones,

Generic keys (like the common ones used to force a Home-to-Pro transition) are only meant to act as an upgrade pathway. They tell your computer to unlock and download the Windows Pro features, but they do not provide a license. Your computer successfully upgraded its edition to Pro, but when it checked Microsoft’s servers for a valid Pro license tied to your hardware, it didn't find one hence the "inactive" status.

To fix this, you have do this:

Ensure you are connected to the internet.

    • Go to Settings -> System -> Activation (or Update & Security -> Activation on Windows 10).
    • Click Change product key.
    • Type in your purchased, genuine 25-character Windows Pro key.
    • Windows will validate it with the servers and activate immediately.

Using a generic key only upgrades the edition from Home to Pro; it does not provide a valid license. After the upgrade, Windows will show as “inactive” until a genuine Pro license is applied and successfully activated.

Do the following based on how Windows Pro was obtained:

    1. If a Pro product key was purchased (retail key, OEM card, etc.)
      1. Select Start > Settings.
      2. For Windows 11: go to System > Activation. For Windows 10: go to Update & Security > Activation.
      3. Select Change product key.
      4. Enter the 25‑character Windows Pro product key that was purchased.
      5. Select Next and complete activation.
    2. If the Pro upgrade was bought from the Microsoft Store on this device
      • The license is a digital license linked to the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
      • Make sure the device is connected to the internet and signed in with that same Microsoft account.
      • Restart the PC (use Restart, not Shut down) so Windows can complete the edition upgrade and attempt automatic activation.
      • If it still shows as inactive, open Settings > System/Update & Security > Activation and run the Troubleshoot option if available.
    3. If activation shows a specific error code
      • Check the error against the activation error guidance:
        • Errors like 0xC004C003, 0xC004F034, 0xC004C008, 0xC004C770, 0x803FA071, 0xC004F00F, 0xC004F211, 0xC004F213, or 0xC004F212 indicate issues such as an invalid key, key already used on another device, edition mismatch, or hardware change.
      • For those cases, follow the steps in the error description (for example, entering a key that matches the installed edition, purchasing a new key from the Microsoft Store, or using the Activation Troubleshooter and “reactivate after a hardware change” if applicable).

If there is no valid Pro license (product key or digital license) associated with the device or account, Windows Pro cannot be activated; a genuine Pro license must be purchased and then applied via Change product key or the Microsoft Store.
