Why do I recently get this message: "blocked content: the activex content in this file is blocked" when opening many spreadsheets

I have monthly copies of a spreadsheet going back 5 years. Opening any old spreadsheet no generates the error message. I doubt the spreadsheet actually has ActiveX controls. Not able to attach a screenshot for some reason.
