Hello,

I am running into an issue with Excel application where I am no longer able to use the "3D Map" feature.

I used to use the search bar to load the feature but now when i do that i am faced with the following error:

3D Maps encountered an error while contacting Microsoft Bing mapping services. Functionality may be limited. (Status Code: 4)

I have tried to used another network, and another computer.

I have tested on 5 devices now, from different users and networks.

It seems that the Microsoft Bing mapping services are having an outage. Could anybody confirm?

I get the same error as well. But, I don't think it is related to DirectX.

I noticed more people are reporting the same issue here. Anybody from MS could confirm what's going on?

Same error here. Tested on 3 PCs in different networks. Win10 and Win11. Office 365.
Local desktops both on and off domain. Public and private network.

We're also experiencing the same issue on multiple computers on multiple networks. This started for us on Friday, September 23rd. I hope we see some form of acknowledgement from Microsoft on the nature of the problem and when we can expect it to be fixed.

Same issue here - we've rebooted, installed older versions, and tried it multiple computers.

Still doesn't function.

We've grown to rely on this software and I'd hate to have to go find a new solution - truly hope this gets attended to promptly!!

Same issue here, I have 72 different computers across the country that are experiencing the same issues. Why put out a update with out checking how it will impact your end-user.

Where do I submit a return request for being sold a product I can not use properly.

I wanted to let you know I had the same issue and I found a work around, Its a typical MS screwed something up. before you try to load anything got to the data tab and hit get data -> from other sources -> From Web. It will ask you to put a URL. Put any URL that resolves I used google.com but I believe any will work. It will give you a forma asking you to do something with the data. I just closed that form and opened the 3d Maps and it worked. It appears to not actually check if its connected before returning that message unless its already connected.

We solved this easily by uninstalling Microsoft office (2016 version) and installing a later version (we did 365 version - but 2019 would probably work).

For the DirectX error, yes you are correct. However the original post was pointing to a different error that would appear before the DirectX error which indicated an issue connecting to a Microsoft Bing mapping service. That was occurring due to an outage which was resolved by Microsoft about a week later.

Hi,
it's a problem of Excel and internet connection from plugin level. Microsoft has messed something up.
The workaround is to do a data upload to the "DATA" ribbon. Load anything as an import of an xls file (such as the example file provided by MS chicago crimes.xls). Once the data is loaded, the ribbon and the 3d Map button works.
You can see the problem on the green line at the very bottom of Excel. If you don't load the data, there is a "no connection" message, as you load the data, "done" appears.
Someone needs to explain what are the mechanics of excel connection and how to diagnose or regulate that it is online or offline.

Force TLS 1.2 to use applications, excel is this case with 3d map, no need change tls for winhttp. Save in one file .reg and execute, no need restart, works fine.

Hi Marc,

thanks for the tip, but it doesn't change anything. We have disabled TLS 1.0 and 1.1 by default in our company.

This issue has appeared multiple times in the past, mentioned in various forums and it seems like there is no fix on the user side, after a few weeks it "fixed itself". Microsoft Support couldn't help here either, at least not first level.

The fix that @Marc M.A suggested almost worked. On my system, the registry key is slightly different; there is a back slash missing in the reg key path right after "Microsoft". This worked on my system. NOTE that my system is not clean, it has previously had M365 Apps for Enterprise installed, then uninstalled and replaced with the old Office 2016. So there could possibly be left overs still from the 365 Apps install that affects the behaviour. I But now the 3D Maps feature works and can be played back in Excel 2016 (Enterprise). **** replaced by MS in text below, should be one backslash

This may be a problem caused by office updates, it is recommended that you roll back the version of office to the version that excel3Dmap is normally using.

Rollback to version 2208 (Build 15601.20088) (Aug/31/2022) and version 2207 (Build 15427.20210) (Aug/9/2022) did not resolve the issue.

3D-maps worked at the end of august.

Problems were identified yesterday (sept/27) for the first time. At the start, the map still loaded but would not resolve any data. The second error (DirectX) only appeared after an online-repair and reinstalling office 365. Since then no map is shown anymore.

Same issue on two other computers that were tested on different networks.

I have tested an earlier version of Office as well,

It did not work, used Office Scrub tool to remove that installation and installed a fresh uptodate office package, same exact issue.

Deinstalling all office components and reinstalling the 32-bit version made the DirectX error disappear!
The first error message is still there, but 3D maps seems to be working!!

It started one or two weeks ago.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Pack Office but it is still not working.
