Grammarly won't open in Word

Check with Grammarly support at https://support.grammarly.com/hc/en-us. Maybe you need an updated version of the add-in.

Grammarly is a Word add-in, and add-ins are a common cause of Word errors when opening or using them. Troubleshooting should focus on starting Word in Safe Mode and managing add-ins, then repairing Office if needed.

1. Start Word in Safe Mode to test add-ins
   1. Select the Search icon in Windows and type run, then open the Run app.
   2. In the Run box, type:

            winword /safe
      

      and press Enter.
   3. Confirm Word shows “Microsoft Word (Safe Mode)” in the title bar.
   4. Try working in Word without using Grammarly. If Word works normally in Safe Mode, the issue is likely with an add-in (such as Grammarly).
2. Disable add-ins (including Grammarly)
   1. With Word still running in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
   2. In the Manage list at the bottom, select COM Add-ins (or Word Add-ins if applicable), then select Go.
   3. Uncheck Grammarly in the list of add-ins and select OK.
   4. Close Word.
   5. Start Word normally (without /safe) and check if Word runs without the Grammarly error.
      • If Word works after Grammarly is unchecked, the Grammarly add-in is the source of the problem. Install the latest Grammarly version from the vendor or leave it disabled/removed if not needed.
      • If Word still has issues, repeat the steps and uncheck other add-ins one by one to find the problematic one.
3. If Word fails even in Safe Mode
   • If Word does not start in Safe Mode, the problem is not with add-ins. Run an Office repair:
     • Close all Office apps.
     • Use Online Repair for a more thorough repair as described in Repair an Office application.
   • If Online Repair does not resolve the issue, a deeper cleanup (including registry fixes) may be required by support, as registry problems have been identified in similar Word error scenarios.

If Grammarly remains the only add-in that fails while Word itself works fine with other add-ins disabled, the next step is to contact Grammarly support for an updated or compatible version of their add-in.
