    Hello Oziel Borges,

Closing your Microsoft account before a long-term subscription expires requires bypassing the standard cancellation lifecycle. If you are dealing with a personal Microsoft account, utilizing the standard account at account.live.com/closeaccount.aspx will likely be blocked because canceling your subscription through the dashboard merely disables the recurring billing. To resolve this, you must engage Microsoft Support directly to request an immediate forfeiture and termination of the subscription. Once support confirms the subscription is entirely removed from your profile, the system will allow you to mark the account for closure, initiating the standard suspension period before permanent deletion.

If this request involves a commercial Microsoft 365 or Azure environment, the process is tied to tenant deletion within Microsoft Entra ID. You must first cancel the active subscriptions in the billing administration portal and then open a support ticket to request an expedited deprovisioning. Standard cancellation places business subscriptions into a retention state that temporarily blocks the deletion of the directory. After support successfully clears the subscriptions, navigate to the Microsoft Entra ID overview pane in the Azure portal and ensure all other user accounts, enterprise applications, and billing ties are removed. With the directory completely empty and you acting as the sole global administrator, the system will clear the final validation checks and permit you to delete the tenant permanently.

For a Microsoft 365/Windows business environment, the Microsoft account or tenant can only be fully closed after all active subscriptions are cancelled or have ended. To delete the account before January 2027, cancel the subscriptions first, then close the account.

    For a business (work) account/tenant:

    1. Cancel all active subscriptions
      • In the Microsoft 365 admin center, cancel each active subscription for the tenant.
      • Follow the steps in Cancel your subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center as referenced from the close-account guidance. If using an MCA billing account and outside the immediate cancellation window, turn off recurring billing and wait for the term to end.
      • Note: If a subscription is explicitly deleted (rather than allowed to expire), it skips the Expired and Disabled states and SharePoint/OneDrive data is immediately deleted. Back up any needed data first.
    2. Wait for data-retention period (if applicable)
      • After cancellation, subscriptions move to Disabled status. Admins can still access and back up data while Disabled.
      • Customer data may be deleted after 90 days and will be deleted no later than 180 days after cancellation.
    3. Close the Microsoft business account (tenant)
      • Follow the steps in Close your Microsoft business account:
        • Step 1: Delete all users except the Global Administrator.
        • Step 2: Ensure all active subscriptions are cancelled as above.
      • After users and subscriptions are removed and other close-account prerequisites are met, complete the tenant closure process as described in the close-account article.

If this is a personal Microsoft account with a consumer subscription, cancel the subscription from the Services & subscriptions page of the Microsoft account, then follow the How to close your Microsoft account process. The account can be marked for closure even if the subscription term would otherwise run longer; access and data follow the timelines described in the consumer close-account documentation.

Before proceeding, always back up important data (OneDrive, email, SharePoint/Teams content, etc.), because explicit deletion of subscriptions or the account can cause immediate or eventual data loss.
