Try these steps in order to fix Excel opening/closing issues and errors:

    1. Update Office/Excel
    • Install the latest updates for Microsoft 365/Office. A known issue causing hangs and file open problems was fixed in newer versions (for example, Excel 16.34 and later).
    1. Repair Office
    2. Close all Office apps.
    3. Go to Windows SettingsAppsInstalled apps.
    4. Find Microsoft 365/OfficeModify.
    5. Choose Online Repair and confirm.
    6. Let it finish and then restart the PC.
    7. Open Excel again and test.
    8. Test with a local file
    • Copy one of the problem workbooks from network/USB/SharePoint to the local Documents or Desktop folder.
    • Open the local copy in Excel.
    • If the local file works, the issue may be with the network/location rather than Excel itself.
    1. Check if Excel is freezing or not responding If Excel hangs or freezes when opening or saving files:
    • Start Excel with no add-ins:
      • Hold Ctrl and start Excel, or run excel /safe.
      • Open a file and see if it works normally.
    • If it works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins one by one until the problem add-in is found.
    1. If Excel opens but shows a blank screen
    • Try an Online Repair as above.
    • Also see if minimizing and then maximizing the Excel window makes the content appear.
    1. If only one workbook will not open or shows format/extension errors
    • The file may be corrupted or in a different format than its extension indicates.
    • Try to repair it using the steps in Repair a corrupted workbook (see referenced article), or ask the sender to resend it as .xlsb or .xls and then save it locally before opening.
    1. Check environment and system If problems continue:
    • Make sure antivirus is up to date and not blocking Excel.
    • Ensure the PC has enough RAM and disk space for large workbooks.
    • Test after a Windows clean boot (selective startup) to see if another program or service is conflicting with Excel.

If, after these steps, Excel still opens and closes with errors for all files, contact Microsoft Support for guided troubleshooting.

    Hi, Azhar Kazmi

Excel can close by itself if it is loading a bad startup file, damaged cache, or a broken user setting. Since the usual repair/update/safe-mode steps did not help, I would check the items that Excel loads before the workbook even opens.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

First, close Excel completely. Press Windows + R, paste this path, then press Enter:

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache

Delete the contents of that folder, then restart the PC and test Excel again. This only removes temporary Office cache files, not your Excel documents.

Next, check Excel’s startup folder. Press Windows + R and open:

    %appdata%\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

If anything is inside, move it to the Desktop temporarily, then open Excel again. Also check:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\XLSTART

If Excel works after that, one of those startup files/macros was likely causing the crash.

It is also suggested that you test Excel from a new Windows user account. If Excel works there, the problem is likely with the old Windows profile or Excel settings, not the workbook itself.

One more simple test: change the default printer to “Microsoft Print to PDF” or “Microsoft XPS Document Writer,” then reopen Excel. Excel checks printer drivers at startup, and a bad printer driver can sometimes make it crash or show errors.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
