I have the same problem which only occurred when I was forced to use a newer version of Teams. It seems you now need separate versions for work and personal.

I've been using the AfterShokz OpenComm headset for years with MS Teams and this only became a problem in the last few months. Nothing has changed with the headset, only teams being updated. It seems that Teams started doing a full hardware mute on my system, instead of muting just in teams. This is annoying for two reasons 1) The beeping while muted makes it impossibly hard to listen on mute in a meeting and 2) Having one app mute my microphone across my entire device presents issues with being in multiple calls at once across different meeting platforms.

Microsoft, please provide some support here - this behaviour is very disruptive - other meeting platforms do not cause this type of mute. I've since used WebEx, Google Meet, Zoom and Bluejeans < none of these have the same issue.

I "solved" this issue by buying a simple USB-Bluetooth dongle and syncing my Shokz headset to that dongle. But it's a stupid solution.

Try: hold both VOLUME buttons (volume "+" and "-" at the same time) for about 3 seconds. You will hear MUTE OFF. Your problem have solved. Tested on Shokz OpenComm

I have never been able to make the headset mute work in Windows, works great in MacOS

@PBluf Your solution used to work for me until a few months ago, but something changed again in Teams. As we use Teams across our company I am now considering buying another headset unless someone knows an actual solution.

@PBluf I'm using the Shokz OpenComm and just tried your suggestion, but I'm not getting the "mute off" message and tone continues while on mute. Any other suggestions? Is it a Teams issue/setting or a headset issue/setting?

I have the OpenComm headset. I press both the Volume + and - buttons and it doesn't work. I press ONLY the Volume - button for a few seconds, and although I didn't get a "mute off" message, but the beeping stopped. I hope this helps.

All, please don't accept any of the Answers below as Answers until Microsoft just fixes it. It doesn't need to take over the hardware side, it just needs to mute the microphone in the app (not the whole system), period. I appreciate these workarounds and the time you put into sharing, but they likely want this fixed, too. If you make something as an Answer, Microsoft won't fix it.

I solved this by going to devices in Teams and choosing another mic, while keeping Shokz as the sound output device. This didn't work in older versions of Teams (after several seconds sound got disabled in Shokz), but as of the comment date it works.

@pbuf for the time being this is the only solution I think it's working.

Though it needs to do it everytime after you on microphone again and mute again, beep sound is coming back and you need to do it all over again

After the previous Teams update late September, this problem disappeared for me entirely (i.e., no beeping whatsoever). However, after a week the beeping is back, and manual unmute is no longer available.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Update as of 10/19/2023. I have the Open Comm and held the volume down - and volume up + held down at the same time. I heard the Mute Off sound and the beeping stopped! AMAZING :)

I was just about to try the +/- solution when I found the issue seems to have gone away. The last thing I installed is "ASMedia-USB-eXtensible-Host-Controller-Driver_68PNM_WIN_1.16.61.1_A17.EXE". I just installed this to fix a touchpad issue on my Dell XPS 15 laptop. I can only conclude it also fixed the headset issue too (it also solved the touchpad problem). I'm on a call right now and I'm able to mute normally on my AH headset (finally - after years!)

Update. It's back again today. The +/- thing doesn't work for me either. Or indeed anything else, like the Headset/Properties/Levels "fix". This is so annoying!

I'm just having the same problem once again, I was able to solve it by pressing +/- when going muted, but not pressing those two bottoms at the same time is not working I no longer get the voice saying "Unmuted ".

Oh man.. this is extremely disheartening - to find out that this hasn't been resolved!

I purchased a Shokz OpenComm2 UC just a few weeks back because I read that the constant beeping issue had been resolved in newer units. And while that is technically true, it doesn't prevent the loud "Mute On" and "Mute Off" voice notification when toggling mute in Teams.

Now, I know that is leagues better than the constant beeping issue. But I would argue that it still makes this headset unusable. In our typical Teams meetings, I constantly toggle mute - as to limit the background noise leaking into the meeting. I toggle maybe 20-50 times throughout an hour-long call.

The problem with the "Mute On" / "Mute Off" voice notifications is that it's LOUD relative to the meeting volume. Even just today I missed some key information while toggling mute off to be able to answer a question - and having to piece together what someone 'probably' said is not a great use of cognition when in a meeting.

I didn't even realize the issue was relegated to Teams. I happened to join a Zoom meeting to discover the MUTE ON / MUTE OFF issue doesn't happen there. It was fantastic. But, alas, most of my company meetings are in Teams.

Now, I did try a MuteMe (USB peripheral that does nothing except toggle mute with a button, along with LED indicator of mute status) hoping that it would magically resolve the issue by, maybe, doing some OS-level muting. And, indeed, there are many sync-level options for how it will interface with the meeting app, and ensure the mute is synchronized (or not) with the UI. But none of that did the trick for Teams.

Back to the drawing board. Anyone have any similar bone-conducting headset products tested out with Teams?

I tried the registry modification as proposed above, but to no avail. It DID seem to work for awhile, but after a bit the headset just stopped working with the Teams App. No solution that I've tried has worked save for using a dongle-attached headset.

FYI, if you contact Aftershokz support, they should send you (FOC) a LOOP100 USB dongle, which is a hacked bluetooth dongle that exposes to the OS as an audio device, but intecepts the hardware mute request to the headphones, and blocks it. My experience is that this resolves this issue.
