Here is what worked for me:

  1. Log in with an Administrator account
  2. Stop the following services via Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services:
  • Application Experience
  • Background Intelligent Transfer Service
  • Windows Store Service (WSService)
  • Windows Update
  1. Once those services are stopped, open up Windows Explorer
  2. Go to: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
  3. Delete the contents of this folder
  4. Restart the following services via Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services:
  • Application Experience
  • Background Intelligent Transfer Service
  • Windows Store Service (WSService)
  • Windows Update
  • OR -

Restart your machine 7. Head over to Windows Store and everything should work. Also run Windows Update as it will need to rebuild its 'check list' of patches.

I hope this helps some of you folks out there.

Cheers,

Mike

    Hi **** Venning**,**

    1)      Do you get this error when trying to install app/apps from Windows Store?

    2)      Could you please let us know what troubleshooting steps you have followed?

You may follow these methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Try these steps and check if it helps:

    a. Open Windows Store.

    b. Hit "Windows Key+ C" to open Charms bar.

    c. Click on Settings.

    d. Click "Your Account".

    e. Sign out from the account and sign in again.

    Check if it helps.

If the issue persists, check with a different live account.

Method 2: You may try to temporarily disable the third party Security Software and firewalls. If this resolves the issue, you may try to check with the manufacturer of the Security Software for an update for the software.

Note: Enable the security software back after checking for the issue.

Windows 8 is a really good platform. This is my first real interesting problem I've had with it. I've been using Windows since 3.0, and a few flavors of UNIX, a few flavors of Linux, and some OS/2 (which I always thought was amazing and before its time). You could go and buy a Mac ... or you could just get MacOS and install it on a really good PC with UEFI (check YouTube for how). I've never liked MacOS personally but have used it in the past.

I'm now certain that this is a corruption of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder that is causing this error. It must have happened when we tried to download an update to an app over the last week.

I do hope Microsoft are monitoring these forums and come up with a solution to stop this happening again.

Thanks to Mike we have a solution that works, hopefully in all cases.
